Good evening all. Can anyone point me to any layouts modeled in winter? I am considering my small mining layout be modeled on early spring with creeks opening up and ponds forming but the region in modeling is prone to late season snow storms. I have looked around a little but haven't come across anything realistically done in winter. Thanks in advance. Jon Sent from my RM-878_nam_usa_100 using Tapatalk
Funny you posted this. I was just thinking of doing the scenery on my hon3 shelf layout during the winter. Snow!
While winter in reality does not bother me at all, I have never been interested in seriously modeling it. Fall colors are a lot of fun.
Well I'm not looking at the dead of winter I'm leaning towards early spring with the south facing slopes melted off and greening ip and then the deep woods area and valley having deep snow yet piled up along the tracks Sent from my RM-878_nam_usa_100 using Tapatalk
My biggest question I guess is how to model snow and make it look realistic Sent from my RM-878_nam_usa_100 using Tapatalk
I did half of my HCD layout as a deep snow scene. I followed Mike Danneman's snow article from NSR mag nearly to the letter. I love the way it turned out.
I was thinking the same thing. His article was in the Jan-Feb 2007 issue of NSR and I keep it handy. The materials list includes Arizona Rock snow, sifted hydrocal plaster, and artist's gesso.
Wow I really like the look you got with that, I am going deep woods with a little box cab and 2 axle ore cars, kinda excited to see what happens. Course I need to lay some track first
A fellow named Rand Hood did pair of articles in Model Railroader back in the 1990's on modeling winter that may be worth looking at as well. Looks like around 1996. They were good articles on modeling winter. He also has one in the March 1997 MR on culverts and early spring run off.
i agree with ArtinCA.....Rand Hood's articles I believe were put into a MR Book...Modeling the Seasons.....something like that. Then of course there are the articles from Mike Confalone that, although set in spring, give tips on winter modeling ideas. His articles can be found in multiple MR articles since 2006-ish, Model Railroading Planning, and Model Railroad Hobbyist website. Of the two, based on what you stated for interest, look at Rand Hood's articles
