I wanted to take the shine off a repainted caboose, so I brushed on a coat of dull cote, expecting to get a "flat" finish. On drying, I see no difference at all. Are my expectations out of line?
Did you shake the bottle of dull cote real well? I think the dulling agent is something like talc and settles out to the bottom. I usually spray it and get good results.
Are you brushing or airbrushing? It may also be that manually applying doesn't work as well as spraying.
dullcoat works best airbrushed in thin layers. Spray can comes second, but still won't give you a dead flat. Brushing, as you've discovered is pretty ineffective.
The directions on the bottle didn't mention shaking, just said to spread it on. I've just shaken the snot out of it, the results are far better after brushing on a second coat. thanks guys!
I've actually been playing with some rattle can stuff recently, such as Krylon. The results have been plenty good.
I meant Testors Dullcote in the small rattle can, but I would love to see shots of your Krylon work. I'm always looking for a better way.
I'd sure post something, except my camera is just incapable of giving a result which is at all useful. Indoor, outdoor, the macro just will not give anything which isn't way too grainy. It's an old beast, only 4MP. It still does a very decent job for railfanning, but in close for models, stone age. If I had some money.....
First, I threw away any and all DullCote many years ago. In any sun, like through a window, it yellows...badly..then flakes. It is porous. You use it outdoors, any decals you are trying to protect..lift and go away. I use various Krylon clears...no gloss, satin and flats only. Haven't had any yellowing in all these years, plus it is not porous. I have a heater in the shop. One of those oil-filled, electric heated radiators. When I need to paint, I just lay the spray can on it's side between two fins for 10-15 minutes. Makes it spray MUCH better, smoother, all that. Then, figure the cost of a small spray can of DullCote....and look at the cost of a BIG spray can of Krylon. Dave
Plus, if you watch hardware store sale flyers, you can really save some money! That, coupled to easy availability, almost anyplace.....
Precisely. Never seen DullCote in a hardware store....and specials gets you a big can of Krylon for what, $3.29 sometimes....last DullCote I bought was over four bucks....and now you find them at Amazon for seven and a half plus shipping, WalMart five and change IF they have it in store..if not, plus shipping. LHS will usually be on the high end anyway. Buy two BIG cans of Krylon on sale for the same price as one small can of DullCote...and I know what I'd be buying. Dave
What is the stuff called in the Krylon brand that's same as dullcote.. I'll see if I can find it here in AU too..
Raising the temperature of spray cans to body temperature is always best. It will be far more even without sputters unless it's rather old.
The can I am using says KRYLON "Matte Finish". Says it will remove gloss finish and will not yellow. This is an 11oz. can, posted price of $7.99 and I used a 40% off coupon to buy it so I paid $4.79 for the can at Hobby Lobby. I think it works well. Carl
I had pretty good results today in brushing on, Trueline "Flat Glaze". This gave me a nice finish, without brush marks.
