All I say about Nicholas Smith cars is WOW! Definitely a website to watch. Another question. Is the yellow over green paint for Chicago and Northwestern stock cars correct? So far all I have found is one color picture in a railroad yard that shows two yellow/ green cars. However they are so small in the picture I could not make out what type of car they were.
Yes, according to the C&NW Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment Volume 2. Way back on Pages 126 to 128 there are photos of cars in that scheme. They don't appear to match any N Scale models directly so the degree to which you're willing to put up with a stand in is up to you (See: Rule #1). The specific road numbers are 14201, 14555, 14303, 14937 (with a replacement brown door), 18003A and B (paired stock cars!) and 18017A and B. My sense is that if the Color Guide had that many examples, there are probably photos online somewhere as well.
I like the detail in the logo on the Life Like car. Is it a reasonable reproduction and if so how hard is it to change the couplers / trucks?
Funny but I'm not one of these who is satisfied with reading about or hearing about anything in the 1:1 foot scale. I want proof, pictures and documentation. One of the problems with the AT&SF Historical sites is you can't find such. So I did a Bing Search and came up with this but wait there's more. Now how did I get this picture in here? About as close as you are going to get. I noted in my own collection a number of green livestock cars and they are all wrong as are the D&RGW stock cars.. I was hoping to get them painted correctly and re-lettered. One of those rainy day projects. Ok I hope that helps and remember about the time you think you have it figured out, have I got news for you.
This was a T&NO (SP) train in Seguin, Texas. As you can see there is one, probably two, Santa Fe bi-level stock cars with the yellow doors in the consist.
in the photos, the road name includes periods and an ampersand. That dates the car, you can find out when by referring to the ATSF society painting and lettering guide.
Ron, you're correct (funny we have to rely on our Aussie friends to keep us Santa Fe modelers straight... Yes, the IM cars are the only ATSF prototype cars we have in plastic, and very nice models they are. They were produced in two versions, single and double deck (yellow/orange doors) in Sk-R, -S and -T classes, and three lettering versions, early, mid and late. I acquired a bunch of each, thinking I can always modify the lettering to be era-appropriate. They are now hard to find, and I'd hope IM will do a rerun. Here's one in the "late" scheme... Regards, Otto K.
LOL - thanks Otto. :funny: I have about 20 intermountain cars that I run with a mix of MTL cars. Although the MTL cars are 'wrong', they have similar proportions to the Intermountain cars, and add a bit of the variety evident in Russell's photo of his collection. (That's a nice looking train, BTW, Russell.) Intermountain has good photos of all the stock cars it has offered at: http://www.intermountain-railway.com/n/nstockcars.htm Regards, Ron
Unfortunately Intermountain recently announced another run of these cars, and then later canceled them. I'm assuming that was due to insufficient reserves. I spoke to one of the executives from Intermountain a couple of years ago at a train show, and when I asked about those cars he told me that the sales had been disappointing.
Yea Mark, I know. It's unfortunate, because they are very nice models of a very common prototype that roamed far and wide. But they didn't have colorful paint schemes or sexy slogans.... Wait, maybe if IM could do them in silver and red :cute: Otto K.
Thanks for a great discussion. I am adding micro-trains and kadee mtl stock cars to use for the livestock yard. Since they all are built on the same pattern it will be mostly a matter of making sure I get the right colors for the different railroad lines I use. A C&NW car will add some color to a otherwise drab livestock yard.
Gene Maddock in Texas is selling 10+ of the Intermountain ATSF stock cars what I would consider cheap (thought about just buying them myself but figured I'd help a guy out) over in the Yahoo N scale yard sale group. Not affiliated in any way and hope that I didn't step on toes by pointing this out, just trying to help a fellow model railroader.
OK, I managed to score two of the IM cars. Second and third from the left. The fourth car is a Hallmark brass car.
Does somebody have his email address or a way to contact him/ Or am I too late and everything is sold.
Randy, I am Gene Maddox, the person who posted the Intermountain Stock cars and Santa Fe Reefer cars for sale on NSYS that you were inquiring about, PM for your inquiries. thanks, gene maddox
