My Y3 has been stalling alot after removing boiler shell and testing I have a broke solder connection on the 2nd driver set.however the bottom half of the boiler shell (walk ways down) seem difficult to remove, like the driver trucks have to come out 1st,but the shell side cover the pins. trying to resolder this connection with out dissembling at least part of it would probable melt something. Can't find my instruction sheet and the walthers site seems to not have exploded views. Anybody have experience at talking this apart.

I got it fixed. just needed to walk away for awhile. The trucks pop out. you need to remove the tiny screws that hold down the gear cover above the truck that is to be removed and I loosened the motor mount screws also then pull up a little on the worm gear and push down with a small screw driver on the plastic tabs and the truck pops out. I used a new smaller gauge wire and LL/Walthers uses a push pin connector on the PC board. I just solder the old pin to the new wire and plunged it in added a little liquid tape and I was done. It is easy when you look at it.

I really am impressed with this engine design. somebody news to get walthers to release this engine again or buy the design,molds,dies,ect.. and produce it.

Glad you were able to fix that steamer RGW1. I have four of these releases all in the ATSF road name and I think its a fantastic steam locomotive with great sound. Have fun with it.:cool:

I have a freelance RR. I try to get ATSF engines and just remove the santa fe from the tender and cabs. Both of my Y3s are santa fe,however I have added extra air tanks on top of the boiler ( DM&IR thing) and removed the trailing truck and added frame detail to the empty space under the cab to one of them

A happy ending! I was going to say that I somehow broke the casting on one side in my Bachmann 2-8-0 Spectrum where the wires insert through the little hole (the wires are press fit in the hole and for whatever reason were making intermittent contact), so I drilled a small deep hole vertically into the casting and stuck the wire in it. It's a successful fix, but man those are tiny wires! I'm guessing 24 Ga. or perhaps smaller and were very difficult for me to work with.
