While browsing the website of one of the well known n-scale online dealer's site today, I noticed they list the subject 2-8-2 steam locomotives!
This time with dcc and sound installed. Eager to see and hear them. So eager I reserved one.:)

I'm waiting till they ship to see if I want one or not . I'm starting to get a bit more picky on what I buy . I have one of the 4-6-2's that really runs nice and am hoping the new 2-8-2 is at least as good.

My favorite on-line N-scale shop has the MRC 2-8-2 steam locos already in stock, so we should get a review soon.

I have not found a place that has the ones with dcc and sound.
I have a few 4-6-2s in which I had dcc decoders installed. I purchased one older version 2-8-2 and had dcc decoder installed.
I am eager to get the factory installed version with dcc and sound. I model B&O so that is the road name I reserved.

I didn't look very hard because I don't run steam and won't be making a purchase. I did notice the listing stated, "new upgraded 2-8-2 mikes return, and listed as in stock."

Most likely it will be MRC just because they own MP.

Also the ad does not say anything about the who makes the speaker.
I had speakers installed in the B'mann 2-8-0s, they fit however stock weight
    had to be removed.
Posts by J. Colombo have educated me to understand all the decoder functionality needs a great speaker to be fully expressed.

As mentioned in previous posts the MP steamers were in some ways a great addition to N scale steam and in other ways a frustration of 1960s technology. If they have retooled and updated the electrical pickup MRC/MP steam could a great addition to N scale.

The new MRC Model Power 2-8-2 Mikado is in stock at the unmentionable stuff store. They are listed for $180.00 for the standard tender and $185.00 for the Vandy tender.

Too bad that MRC did not put the USRA standard tender behind the B&O version. I guess that I will have to buy a different road name, strip, re-paint and re-letter. As far as I know, only one B&O Q-3 ever had a Venderbilt; it was taken from a scrapped EL-5.

    Does anyone know if:

    1. Do these things have "smart" decoders that allow them to be operated on DC?

    2. If "yes" to #1, will the sound work on DC or must it be DCC?

Dang, this is a good year for N scale steam it seems. I don't need any USRA Mikes, but hopefully they'll bring the Moguls and Americans back at some point because I always wanted a few of those.

This is going to be tough. Get rid of the Model Power 2-8-2 that I have that I planned to get a DCC sound decoder for, or get the Model Power 2-8-2 version with sound. Decisions, decisions. I will play around with the DCC sound version at the store on Tuesday!

So I tested the Model Power 2-8-2, and the sound was decent. I tested it at a certain online retailer. The synchronized puffs were good, and the whistle was well done. However, the puff sounds were lacking, which might be overcome with a better speaker and enclosure. Overall, not bad, esp for roughly $175.

I just got a notification that my B&O 2-8-2 was on the way. Trouble is, I don't recall ever ordering that locomotive. I know I ordered a PRR K4 Pacific but no Mikado.

Well according to the vender, I pre-ordered this locomotive back in January, 2015. But as near as I can tell the re-release of this locomotive did not happen until June, 2015. Maybe I am wrong but I just do not recall pre-ordering this locomotive. I don't do that much pre-ordering to begin with. In fact I do very darn little of it so this is very perplexing to me. Does anyone know if there was a pre-announcement of this locomotive in January, 2015? I checked Spookshow but all he could say was they were released in 2015. His review was done in June, 2015 when apparently the non sound equipped units were released. He did give it an "A" rating.

Long story short here I am done with doing any pre-ordering. That way I will know for sure I didn't order anything.

Yes. It was discovered at the end of january. A forum was started about Model Power and MRC In which you participated. . I should bring it back to the top for you.

You almost certainly will be able to do better sound-wise by ordering the DCC-ready version, getting either a Soundtraxx Econami or ESU LokSound Select Micro, and putting in your own speaker, probably an 11x15mm Knowles Donau in a custom sealed enclosure.

I ordered a DCC-ready unit the other day just to see what I might be able to do on the sound front.
