Great coaling tower. By the look of it, it must be one of the last such structures built before diesels took over.

    Rumour spreadin' 'round,
    In that Texas town,
About that shack outside La Grange.
And you know what I'm talkin' about.

December 22, 1984 at Big Sand Cut on the Saluda Grade (NC), a train works its way upgrade. Southern Railway's paint scheme looks regal, as do those high hood SD-40-2s.

We were discussing railroad forms some weeks ago and I looked through some of my stuff. Just for interest's sake, I'll post some of what I found. I can see why this memorabilia interests you BoxcabE50.

Railroads existed in a sea of paper. Even with computers today, there is a good amount still used. albeit different in many aspects. If anyone is curious about what it took to even move a train only a few decades back, they can wander through this page: http://www.train-orders.com/TOUR.html These were even necessary for small operations.

I found these in the rubble of an L&N yard structure (I think it was formerly the West Knoxville depot perhaps) just after it was razed. Really old stuff, from 1917 and 1936.

There is a promotional film done by the MILW, post-WWII. "A Railroad At Work". Probably can be found on YouTube. It shows views of all the office employees flooding in and out at shift start and end. Scenes of large rooms with desks everywhere, masses of people by the dozens and dozen, typing, using punch cards, etc.

That's an amazingly large collection, all sorts of obscure roads. I need to spend some time there. I saw that you have a BR&W Form 19 -- such a small road. I spent some weekends there volunteering and got this one from a friend. The BR&W still operates, but has lost a lot of their once strong freight traffic. I heard that the end of the line from Ringoes to Lambertville was to reopen.

When people discover I like trains, I often hear, "Oh, my Dad worked for the railroad" or their Grandfather. The industry employed many thousands in good paying, skilled jobs everywhere doing all sorts of tasks. So sad that this work has mostly vanished. We now call a 1-800 number and talk to a computer that doesn't understand English.

I've written about this previously. It has cost them shippers, so the money they believe is saved in such as taxes, is lost anyhow. Also, I've noted how so many communities they pass through are not friendly. No surprise, as nobody lives there any longer, who works for the railroad. The company has totally disconnected itself from the community. Great PR move. Then they wonder why locals are less than enthusiastic about some plan the RR proposes. Duh. I wonder if the RRs get thank you letters or Christmas cards from the truckers?

I agree that many company officers and managers forget that they survive only when they have customers who are willing and eager to use their products.

40 years ago, the leading computer industry trade magazine had a lead article titled, Mr. Company President, have you called your company phone lately? The article was a discussion that a potential customer's first impression was usually from one of the company's lowest paid and least experienced employees manning the main switchboard. The article went on to list the author's experience with cold calls to a dozen or more companies, all with varying degrees of negative impressions. Today's experience would be even worse with the switchboard operator having been replaced by an automated call-routing system with meaningless and frustrating options, often causing the call to be re-dialed after an incorrect option was selected.

As it has been dubbed, "voice mail jail." Or better yet, voice mail h-e- double toothpicks.... It's a cute concept intended to cut costs, (reduced number of employees and equipment), which ends up making the customer do all the work. This instantly fits the definition of stupidity.
