Coming up to Marshall IL, the BARCO came on - Sidney Bufkin, the Engineer, says to get up into the tender and be prepared to JUMP! Guess we didn't take enough water at dock!!! That H-10 just kept on going up to Paris!!! - LAB - Lawrence Baggerly Collection.
If Larry Baggerly was on this trip, evidently no blow up occurred. I wonder if the Barco malfunctioned often? It certainly was a good idea to warn the crew of low water.
Gabe Ginn and I were going to Jeff on #71 and had a couple of meets and a heavy train. I think Gabe could tell you within 10 gal. of the water in the tank at any given time. East of Charlestown Gabe said will the water come out of the test cock at the deck , checking the cock the answer was no, try the one below the deck ,the answer yes but not much pressure. The point being that we had enough water to get to the terminal, but if anything happened we were done. We will take water and I will start my injector. The reason for this was the injector would break, stop putting water into the boiler, and we would be aware of just how much water we had. Between Gabe's injector and my pump we had 3/4 glass of water as he started to slow down. The injector started to break a couple of times but kept working. This showed us one thing, we did not have enough water to make the terminal . As Gabe stopped the brakeman jumped up and said he would take water. As we leaving I told the brakeman thanks for taking water. If it wanted to blow up being on the tank was better then being in the cab was his answer. LEW
