I was looking at my switching layout and realized that I really needed a simple, two foot long warehouse that is about four inches wide. All N Scale buildings seem to be less than 8 inches long. Short of scratch building a proper warehouse, the only other options is to kitbash three into one, or buy a bunch of DPM modular pieces. Even if I buy a pair of DPM Grips Luggage kits, it would only be 15 inches long and the loading dock would only be 7 inches long. I really want a better option, yet all building manufacturers seem to think that we don't need bigger buildings.
I agree that it is a great flat, but I need more depth. The simple fact that it is really the only long building is scary, especially when it is only 320 scale feet long.
I'm facing a similar situation on my switching layout. My solution was to have a warehouse and food processing plant share the long siding.
The DPM modulars are a good way to go if you are OK with an older era building. I did one as a flat many years ago and was happy with it. Walthers also has a modular set but I've not worked with it yet. More recently I scratch built a more modern warehouse building using Evergreen styrene sheet and strip. It's also against the sky board with about a 2 inch depth.
I think the DPM flat is 2" deep and 24" long. So, putting 2 flats together back-to-back sounds like the 4" x 24" building that you want.
Modern warehouses are a pretty easy scratch build. Build it yourself and it will fit the space better, have doors where they look correct. It's pretty easy. I am working on a prototype based structure that is 30" long. This was more complex than a modern warehouse and still didn't take that long. Grab some styrene and show us what you can do!
If you are modeling the 70's or later, you might try to kitbash something using some Pikestuff buildings or get some Evergreen styrene and Pikestuff details and maybe some goodies from Shapeways and go to town.
