I use MT-1015 couplers on all my 3 Kato SD45 ('95 issue) works well and compatible with Atlas and Kato couplers.

I had a similar problem and solved it by unloosing slightly the two screws holding the two engine frames. I hope this will solve your problem.

My favorite locomotives are the ATSF warbonnet E8/9 & GE C44-9W. Both are well made and run very well.
I have a similar model GP35,WP #3007 made in Japan by Kato (I believe for Atlas). A good runner after all these years.
