It has been pretty quiet on this board lately. Anyone else interested in S gauge checking here? If so, list the era you are most interested in. What would you like to see? When I was 12 I had a fairly large American Flyer railroad. We would put it up on the living room floor. After I was married and in my late 20's they all got lost (read stolen but could not prove it) in one of our many moves. In 2006 I started over with N Scale, and am still in it. But I'm toying with the idea of starting an American Flyer S scale railroad in the next 5 years or so. But Wow' the prices are high, I guess the 50's are gone forever:tb-smile:. Is there a difference between American Flyer and other S scale? Also what's the difference in the two track types? See ya Ron
Hi Ron, Welcome to the world of S. We have two styles of S that share a common track gauge. One is the American Flyer trains with the tin plate wheels and couplers. The other style is scale, which use code #100 rail or smaller and Kadee couplers. Two companies produce S with track systems. American Models has a nice track made of brass and is tall enough to run AF trains on it but fine enough to run scale wheels if desired. SHS has a nice track system with NS track and the sectional pieces are on plastic road bed much like the HO Bachmann track. SHS does sell 3' sections of flex track without the plastic ballast roadbed. Their rail is code 155 which means it will run both AF and scale. SHS sectional track pretty much matches the old AF track for radius. SHS is in the process of moving their molds to another factory and will have an announcement soon on resumption of products becoming available again. Good news there. Greg Elems
