Thanks for the encouraging words everyone.

Even though I am concerned about the symmetry, I agree that the scenery will break it up. It is all about persepective.

And yes, the layout will be against the wall on the top and left hand sides.

The room is designed as this : looking overhead, picture a rectangle, except on each bottom corner, you will see two structural walls coming in (from the left and the right side towards the center) three feet and then coming in (from the bottom side towards the center) one foot. On the top of the rectangle, 7' from the left is a block window. The opening is between the two structural walls at the bottom of the rectangle.

This room will be 13' x 6' when framed, insulated and drywalled.

Beaumont, the reach for the back left is a concern of mine.

I am thinking of moving the yard to the right side, extending the layout 1' from 7' to 8' and then down to about 4', so the layout takes on more of a "C" shape now. I can also eliminate that top left interchange and just make the interchange run through the yard. The top left corner will turn into a mountain or hilly terrain to give the layout more "vertical depth".

This being said, I am feeling that I am closer than I have ever been to building a layout. This is definitely exciting!

Still unsure of the new yard. I am severely lacking on the yard planning skills. Where are the yard masters!?

    Any other thoughts?

I really like the plan as is. If you wanted to consider tweaking it:

The cross overs come straight off the curve - no need to change but does lengthen the intervening space and give a "smoother flow". Over all these are just tweaks. I don't know if there are turnouts that would fit.

By the way: Will the "Mystery Plant" be producing school lunch meat?

Add one or two more slots to the yard? I really like that design though...

Your guess is as good as mine. It is vacant and looking for a tenant. School Lunch Meat Production Plant? The modeling opportunities are endless! 8-D

Adjusted the yard and moved it to the left side and relocated the Brewery / Mystery Plant. Also added a little engine facility.

    Thanks for the compliment!

All in all, it seems like I fit a lot in a small space. Is this optimization or is is it too crowded?

Option 2 has the crossing sidings on the inside.

Very nice. No, I do not think it is too crowded. If you wanted more yard space you could probably create a compound ladder track.

    I like it as well.

Ironically, I finally come up with a track plan I like and it will unfortunately be going on hold.

See, with work and free time and family commitments, I do not know how long it will to take get that room done. So to tide me over until that point, I am going to be building a small 2' x 4' layout to get my feet wet. It will also allow me to hone my skills better.

By the way, the lumber, plywood, track and roadbed have been acquired!

Life. It conveniently puts you in the passing siding until it is time for you to go!
