I like the idea of the hastily renumbered unit that just won't go away...

SD 70ACe, headed in for some light weathering. These things have come a long way since the '90's. image.jpg

Train show find 10 days ago. "As-Is", five bucks. Paint flaking off...I knew what it was...I have one. John A. English die cast Yardbird. Cleaned it up a bit the night I got it home, runs fine. Stripped the paint, discovered lots of add-on work (and some odd stuff), has junction boxes and electrical conduits for the lights, steps to the sand dome on engineer's side, cut levers. I removed a couple of pieces that just weren't quite right. The boiler handrails weren't there...but he'd drilled out the holes and plugged them with brass rod. Drilled, fitted stanchions, painted first coat, added in the piping, second coat, added the boiler handrails, last coat...so no "shadows".
Fixed the added on back-of-cab handrails, and above the side windows, tender front okay...rebuilt the tender slope step railing.
Have a drawbar and tender backup light housing coming. Have to add the rear coupler (have it). Missing one tender truck sideframe....had the exact part in a box...two springs and 4 axles.....up on it's feet and runs.
Usually the Yardbirds loop the boiler handrails up and behind the headlight, I thought I'd try doing the loop down, since the curved rail and three stanchions were there. I like it better.

Yes they have come a long way. But I still cant figure why the windshield wipers and sun visors perform the same as a GP7 built in the 1950's.
Please post up some photos of your weathering Dale. Always glad to see your stuff.

I just picked up this Olympia 4-8-2, never painted and I think never run. It's DC, has been in a display case since at least '92. I've always wanted an unpainted brass steam locomotive. I like the detailing, seems well done. I have no idea how it runs yet. What kind of reputation does this line have? Do they run well or need a lot of re-engineering to become useful? I've always thought it was funny that so many of these beautifully made pieces have a poor reputation for operation. I don't have a box or any paperwork with this one and I don't know my locomotives very well by sight. What is this? I'll look further into it as time permits but any insights into the Olympia line or this loco in particular are appreciated. Thanks.

Wow some cool old finds there.

The yardbird is kind of unique for sure. At first glance I thought that brass loco would be some kind of CB&Q loco, but not sure if that would be the right tender. I was just guessing, but now I am tempted to look around a bit at old pictures. Sure is a beast though.
    -------------------
Based on your tender, and I am no expert, I would start by looking at SP locos.
    --------------------

I just keep looking around and coming back. This surelooks like it though and seems like a rare bird too. Only 50 were produced.

You can use the arrows to look at more images, but this side view seems to have the same distinctive piping. https://www.flickr.com/photos/57293605@N07/16343377321/in/photostream/

It makes sense it's C&O considering where the water pumps are. (think those are water pumps on the front, again not an expert by any means here.)

Nice score Dale, those Proto SD50/60 are sure brutes, great looking out of the box, good runners, and they sure pull.
got a few car kits too I see. Looks like you have some more projects huh?

Hi Tom, yes it was a good score, I didn't spend THAT much money. But I did get home with some neat stuff. The prices were pretty decent for a change. Everyone wanted to sell something. The only folks who weren't selling were over-priced.

this was in Springfield MO and put on by the Ozarks Model Railroad Association. They seem to be a pretty decent bunch. I also got some rust and graffitti decals for a door prize and I kind of went crazy and bought a Bachmann On 3 locomotive and 2 passenger cars. Got them at a decent price, so no complaints.

so I had a fun time and stocked the "to-do" bin for a bit.

I ran across a video on YouTube by Monster Al on weathering by dipping, it is a quick way to make a car look used. I tried it on a ACF hopper last night. I'm also putting some of the rust decals on it. I'll post pictures in the workbench forum in a couple of days.

    keep up the good work!

Quite the steal. How much do you have into this now that rebuilding is done?

Dale, I own a Proto CSX SD60. It is a very good loco(at least to me). I added yellow ends with new CSX decals, weathered the unit, and also, opened up the cab and painted green "safety" vests on the two crew members. LOL! You should be very happy with it! JMS

    Hi John,

That looks great. What decals did you use? I will do the yellow ends on mine. I have been looking at the trucks, fuel tank and lower parts. I plan to darken mine up quite a bit. We have seen a few CSX units come through Tulsa on the BNSF, I assume these were lease units. I am looking at paring it with one of my big units.

Thank you for posting the picture.

On another note, the rust decals are quite nice. I did up a ACF hopper but I messed up the decals so I am back to the drawing board on the rust. I'm going to work with the, some and see if I can get them to look right.

    thanks,
    dale

Dale, over the years, CSX has had a few different paint schemes. This one(called "stealth" by some fans) was first introduces on CSX's brand new SD60s and C40-8s. However, it tended to be hard to see at grade crossings in the fog, and low light conditions. So, CSX went to their "bright future" scheme or what fans call YN2... for Yellow Nose version 2. Any locos that were not needing paint jobs, just got a yellow nose/end put on it... and this became YN1. The new "dark future" scheme that CSX is using now is called YN3. On my SD60, I used CSX Yellow(from YN2) from Polly Scale. I used "CSX" decals on the nose/end from a Microscale YN2 decal kit. The extra warning decals and the K9-APU decal(below cab windows) were from a Microscale YN3 decal kit. Because of the blue on bottom, I used light grey/dust colors for weathering... with some black chalks added after. As for rust... yeah, always been difficult for me... I have messed up some cars by putting too much rust on them and then, I had to do a repaint! LOL! Hope this helps! JMS

I can certainly see how this would be true. I am surprised we have not ever seen regulations from DC, limiting use of some colors.

I usually do NOT do HO, although I still have a few pieces left, from those days!
I was given several pieces of HO stuff, by a friend. Thought he was going to get started, but
decided it just wasn't in his interest!

Minor work needed, mainly couplers and coupler covers.
End ladders on caboose also needed.
All are Athearn equipment, except the Lignum boxcar, that's a Life Like car.
Will be offering all items for sale later!
Since I really have no need, or space, for them!
Although, I'd like to try detailing the BN Geep and caboose!
    Just because! However.........

Found two old kit cars! One a tank car from Roundhouse, and an undecorated ACF Covered Hopper from Athearn BB. Assembled the tank car... still need to weather it. Painted and decaled the covered hopper for my Dupont Plant(DUPX report markings).
Was out of decal paper, so I had to use individual decals letters for the LD LMT and LT with the numbers! 36 little tiny decals(plus 18 more if you consider the DUPX 40255 on the ends of the car!)... next time I will just wait for the decal paper! LOL! Enjoy! JMS

It's always interesting when someone gifts an item or items. We never know if it will be temptation, a money pit, or?

Son Sean bought his first loco at the OKC Train Show Yesterday. He definitely has good taste, InterMountain ES 44DC in the H1 paint. Those things run great!

Wow. Look at the "pinked" units. That was one paint scheme which most times nature did a number on it.
