    Here's my small N-scale layout -- 32" x 48".

The track plan was inspired by John Allen's original Gorre & Daphetid, but I broadened the curves so that the smallest radius is just under 10". The G&D was HO scale with 14" minimum radii -- really tight!.

I have a 1'x4' N scale layout that is a version of the Inglenook Siding switiching game.

    The trackplan.

talking about prototypical layout in small space, here is something I designed before Wrightsville port. This layout is inspired by the Harlem Transfer (Prototype picture below). I designed it with a minimum radius of 10" and used off the shelf turnouts dimension. If someone is interested for hand laid tracks, it is possible to replicate the complete prototype in this space. If you are the hand laying type guy, Fast Tracks might help (www_handlaidtrack_DOT_com). Tim Warris, the founder of the company is building a more complex Bronx Terminal model in both HO and N scale.

This one is 4.5 ft X 2.5 ft. I have also kept some space for modeling a decent size of water body and vessels.

The best thing about this design (I mean the prototype design) is the uniqueness of operation and very interesting switching techniques that you can adapt. The structures can be unique too. And this whole layout gives a very urban feeling... c'mon... it's New York...:tb-biggrin:

You could always make T-Trak modules.. They are quite small and can be swapped in and out.. Plus very easy to store..

check the T-trak group for more info.
