Sunday was the first solid weekend day I was home and not in New England, so I took advantage of the sunny weather & warm temps to see what I could find around Ray Yard, the former MKT yard in Denison, TX.

No road freights at the time (UP runs 16 or so trains daily on the Choctaw Sub), but I DID find some sets of power used for locals and yard-switching, to wit:

    GP38-3 1023, a GP40 deturboed & derated to 2000 HP.

GP38-2 314, its mate. Both were at the west end of Ray.

GP38-2 592, with the lightning-stripe treatment (but no wings on the nose, sorry)

HLCX GP38-3 3875 (wonder if it's an ex-UP diesel....), another rebuilt GP40. It looks good compared to its mate...

GP38-2 733. Who painted this engine- Earl Scheib?????

Here is another one of those units, where the paint is just peeling off...

The harsh western sun does nasty things to paint.....
Would be interesting to model. How would one do that??

You might be able to do some fading of the paint by using some "Formula 409" cleaner on it. I once built a model of a 55 Chevy Nomad and spilled som 409 on on it. Had to go over the whole car with the 409 to make it all match again. You could use a q-tip to apply it where you want faded paint.

Never would have thought of that! Thanks, Kit!!

    Thanks for the tip!

Maybe paint it grey, bare metal, and some rust colors - then weather it to disguise the paint outlines

One good trip through a wash rack, and that old paint will be gone.

Hate to tell ya this, but it looks like UP has adopted SP's old policy of washing diesels- in other words, don't bother. For proof, check out any SD70MAC on UP rails- chances are it'll be grimy.

This poor thing doesn't need washing or a good paint job mre than it needs a Mass of Christian burial [IMG]

This is what happens to old SP units- even the "bloody nose" got painted an uninspiring shade of gray. If it weren't for the Sonic Drive-In poster, this would be one bland-looking diesel.

Oh yeah, shot this old warrior at Denison as well. It's an SD40 that has seen far, far better days [IMG]

    I'll try it someday--first I gotta get some F409..
I have very little time during the week, thanks to a crazy work schedule.

BTW, I LOVE your signature line..... :D
