A couple of months ago, I purchased a box o' slides (around 600-ish). They all came from one gentleman's collection, so most are by him, however a number of them are by other photographers he traded slides with (all are credited by who shot it, where known). Most of the views were taken during the 1970s, with some before and after. The subjects run the gamut from Class I to shortline and everything in between. I figured that, as I go through them all, I might as well share them.

    Here's the first five.

Those last two views remind me of Illinois Terminal and Chicago Great Western power.

If I remember correctly, the green scheme is meant to be a homage to the IT.

These will be great fun to see. What are you using for a slide scanner? Thanks!

Yes! It's more like I commandeered the one my folks bought to convert old family photos.

And yes, more will be coming!

Will, a suggestion--you, as the moderator of Weekly Railfan Photos, should establish a section of that for yourself, to attract more viewers to this obviously fine collection that you are scanning. You select X number of photos as you always have been doing (thank you), and add "Will's section" with either an equal number or less, from your collection. Just a suggestion. I'm sure Charlie will agree, even though I made a bad comment about craft beer.

I've considered that before, but I'd hate to detract from everyone else's fine photos by making half of them mine. But, I may consider doing one or two.

Pardon the fuzzies on some of the photos. Didn't clean them off as well as I'd thought.

Indeed, the SD40X prototypes, basically the SD40 body and machinery on an SD35 frame, was the future - 645 engine. alternator-rectifier drive, etc.

As for those lab coats checking out the SW1500, they're so clean it's suspicious... :cautious:

Them switchers in cascade green and ATSF on the cabs . . . . an ominous precursor to that merger!

All very neat pics so far! Especially that double-headed steam!

A little more backstory behind this. So, I purchased these slides at the last train show direct from the gentleman's (Bob Jensen) sons. They had already sold the presorted bags of slides, and seeing as I'd previously bought slides from them before (to the tune of 100 Rio Grande views), they let me pick through the three bins of unsorted slides (however, I was told that their dad has accumulated some several million slides). Three hours and a couple thousand slides later, I ended up with the around 600 that I bought. I chose slides based upon the subjects that I thought were pretty cool, even if the actual photo was not of the best quality. I figured that if the subject was interesting enough that made up for the lack of quality (I must say though, there were only a handful of views that were of dubious quality. I also did my best to try and get a selection that was spread across the country, but still bought a lot of Rio Grande, Santa Fe and other Western Roads). Most of them were shot by Bob himself, however, a large quantity were by the folks he traded with. He must have had a running correspondence with a man by the name of Carl F. Nelson as there was also a large amount of views by him. In buying these, I also figured that not too many eyes had seen these, and that they were worth sharing with a much larger audience. So, one by one, I've been uploading the scanned slides to my Flickr account, and I figured they'd garner some kind of reception on here too.

There sure is some interesting stuff there, Will, and thanks for going to the trouble of scanning the slides and posting them. I know that sometimes can be fun, and other times seems like a job.

The bottom photo of the US Pipe Baldwins and Alco is probably in Birmingham, AL. A friend told me that US Pipe served two cement plants northeast of Birmingham, Lonestar and Lehigh Portland. Such a great shot! I'll bet they sounded sweet -- there's an exhaust stack for each cylinder.
