    Does someone really have to walk the length of these to check couplings before heading out? Or do they self report in some way? Looking at these from the Scotland world, I'm always gobsmacked at how long a train can be!

    It is called an air test. Walk the length of the train to check the brakes and for any defects that may be missed.
