Were there any new products announced this week at the NMRA convention in Orlando Florida?

I don't think we will see anything until tomorrow when the manufacturers are up and displaying...

Okay, fortunately there is nothing that floats my boat. More money available for decoder installs.

Did we REALLY need a GP-39 or ANOTHER SD-9? Or a $33 ore hopper? Hey, how about something that hasn't been done before and had several hundred sold? How about a Baldwin AS-616? Just sayin'...

    Swing and a miss...

Yikes. Ore car at $33? It may sell to a few diehards in some paint scheme.

I did see the I-M SD40-2 in MILW listed. Thankfully post-dates my era.

This hobby is getting too expensive for me. I may downsize the accumulation to just HOn30.

The ore car is something that N scale has never had RTR. As for the price, it's in line with everything else they've released the last several years.

It's in line with what Bachmann has charged for things they have released, not necessarily for the hobby in general.

    Exactly. (y)

I am thinking the mega-discount folks out there will have these at a much lower dollar amount.

If this is supposed to be a PRR G39 ore jimmy it is missing the strikers mounted at the four corners. Those strikers were an obvious spotting feature

Like I said on a different topic, shop around and you will probably find them for less.

Can a scratch built part be added and painted?

We discussed this on another forum, and it's pretty certain that the prototype is Southern Pacific. It's basically the same car that Athearn (ex-MDC) makes in HO.

Got back from 'O'land and a quick detour to Clearwater late last night.
I had a good time speaking with the manufacturers and modelers.
I was disappointed with the lack of 'significant' motive power or new passenger sets.
Other conventions I've been to usually had something special announced.
Most of what was shown was already known before the show.
There were some comments from a couple of the manufacturers that some other items are close to being disclosed... but... still too early.
Scale Trains had their 'carbon blacks' hoppers on display. Kato had the full Oly-Hiawatha and FP-7 displayed. YES... I ASKED ABOUT THE NCL... but only said its getting 'closer' to being discussed in Japan... as well ad the EB. Cast your votes at the Kato website.

    So... to continue...
Kato rep mentioned the 'Great Dome' is in tūhe works. 7th and final installment of the Cal-Zephyr series will be produced maybe next year (yeah for me!).
There is still some hope for those small passenger consists like the Rock Island Texas Rocket and maybe others... (lots of 'maybe').
I didn't get a chance to speak with Atlas staff... they seemed busy with other trade members. I didn't see anything on their display that was new... just new paint & road numbers on existing stuff to be re-run.
Nothing new to show at the Athearn booth... no pre-production model of the NP Z-6 or SP&S Z-8.
At Bachmann nothing more to add than what has already been mentioned (ore car looks nice).
Intermountain Railway was showing off their SD40-2 (I got one at rhe show). They are winding down the CCS passenger car production... I asked that they try to finish consists which are lacking key cars (like Vista-Domes for the NP & GN consists).
Conspicuously missing from the show was Broadway Limited... I was expecting to see some pre-production samples of the Pennsy T1... and anything else they had announced last year. It was strange NOT to see them at the show since their offices are in Ormond Beach FL... about 2-3 hours from Orlando.
Walthers... well... forget about totally new motive power... they are slowly upgrading former LifeLike diesels for DCC and ?sound? Don't hold your breathe for a rerun of the Y2b Mallet... ain't happening. Their rep basically said that their best results in N scale is with the building kits... which is what they were showing and talking about.

When/if that happens, I'd also like to see Kato produce their EMD F3 and/or Alco PA locos in the D&RGW yellow and black paint scheme:

    http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/rail/donald_beneke/diesel/ddrgw21.html
I'd be ready to cast my vote in a web poll or with a pre-order if that's what it takes to make it happen.

Supposedly the OH won out over the EB because the "home office" likes trains with unusual/unique passenger cars.
The OH has both the super dome and the skytop observation cars, whereas the EB only has the great dome.
By comparison, despite a beautiful paint scheme, the NCL doesn't have any really distinctive cars.

The strikers are the most obvious deficiency but there are others. For example, the ribs are not the same as a G39. The strikers could be scratched built but the ribs would entail more work. Might be easier to scratch built a prototype and cast copies in resin. The number on the car is a G39 series number and the car is identical to the Bachmann HO model, right down to the number. So the car, as pictured is a foobie for PRR. It may be based on another road's prototype but definitely not PRR. As for the price you can expect about a 40% reduction for a street price. Even then you are looking at something in the $19-20.00 range.

Which is funny because there doesn't seem to be one being done in SP.
