Hi Brokemoto, The article in the "The Little Giant" listed Jack as one of the authors.

This caboose photo was used as an example for the newly painted cabooses,
note the herald does not have a black background

An article I was just reading from "The Headlight" states:
"None of the N.Y.C. ovals that were applied to N.Y.C. steel bay-window cabooses had black
backgrounds. For further details see July, 1974 "HEADLIGHT" article "The N.Y.C. Oval" for
    further painting and herald details."

    Another example in Michigan:

The only photos I know of, are the b/w photos of passenger equipment in the Harold M. McLean P&LE book. Rich has a few photos of passenger equipment in his P&LE Volume 2 book, mostly the commuter equipment, both heavy weight and the newer cars from the C&O and L&N.
I think a few of my photos are in Jack's P&LE gondola book.

I have the McLean book. That is where I found the black and white bay window. I did not see any photographs of the baggage/mail cars. There are some of the coaches, and, of the baggage cars ( the last behind PAs), but none of the baggage/mail.

I did see the photographs of the passenger equipment in the Borokowski book,as well, but there are none of the baggage/mail cars. What is funny is that I did see the dimensions of the baggage and mail compartments, somewhere, but there was not even an accompanying drawing. They seem about right for the MT car, but I am not sure if it looks anything like anything that the P&LE had. It does resemble at least one class of NYC baggage/mail cars. Both Microscale NYCS passenger sets have P&LE lettering.

The 1956 photograph in the Color Guide shows a NYC caboose, as well. The herald does not appear to be black, either, but it is difficult to tell from the angle. Perhaps Original Poster is going on the wood cabooses, which did have the black herald. I still have not found my Howard Fogg booklet of paintings, although you can not always go on what he painted. B-mann did that with its S-4. P&LE never had one in that paint scheme.

I just found some additional information that I added to my post above about the NYC Bay Window Caboose emblems. Now I need to see if I can find the July, 1974 "HEADLIGHT" article "The N.Y.C. Oval"

We've had a late change to one car in the run. The road number for 42071 original Norfolk Southern red #387 has been changed to #383. The change brings the run closer to prototype and deconflicts it with an earlier MTL run even though though their 387 was in a different paint scheme version.

    Thanks,

Regarding the black background on the logo of the New York Central oxide red run, I refer you to the color photo of NYC 20387 on page 113 of NYC Color Guide Volume 2 by Len Kilian and others. The background is unambiguously black.

Hi Craig, According to the "Headlights" article I was reading, the author did state those cars existed, but they were "Non Standard". The author went on to say all the oxide red bay window cabooses were not suppose to have a black background per the paint diagrams. It seems like someone did not get the memo :ROFLMAO::) Keep up the great work at Bluford Shops, I've already pre-ordered two of the P&LE cabooses to go along with my P&LE and NYC transfer cabooses. Hi Craig, not to derail the thread, but is Item 60401 Public Service of New Jersey USRA 30'6" 2-Bay Hopper available yet? If not, when do you expect them? Thank you.

Regarding the background color for the herald on the NYC cars:

On the one hand, see the text in the middle of the last page of this article:
    https://nycshs.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/pages-from-1975q1.pdf
On the other hand, see the bottom photo on the last page of this article:
    https://nycshs.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/the-nyc-oval-part2.pdf

Given that the black background seems to be the exception to the rule, I'd suggest making the background for the herald on the model the same as the body color.
