A Southern Pacific Mikado parked at Sunset Station in San Antonio. I took the photo at 4 AM while waiting to catch Amtrak's Sunset Limited to Houston a few years ago.

Nothing new from me, just a short, and fast CP westbound manifest headed to Portal, ND, just west of Burlington, ND. This was literally, drive way too fast to overtake the 60MPH freight, drive way too fast down a dirt road, bail out while the car is skidding to a halt and fire off one grab shot!

That's a fine shot Hemi! You chose the perfect spot to slide to a stop.

NS advances through Devine Jct. in Columbia, SC with a UP unit helping to shoulder the load. That's CSX in the foreground. Both roads share a short length of track here, with the CSX main crossing over en-route to its yard in Cayce, SC.

Too bad they couldn't give that nose a quick wash and a more/semi-matching yellow patch.

I think the west is turning into a pumpkin patch! Lots of BNSF action everywhere. Here's mine . . .

Railroading down by work (Plymouth, MI)is a lot different than railroading at home. CSX seems to move a lot of light power between Detroit and Toledo, depending, I guess, on where it's needed.
Top photo: I didn't get there in time to see this lashup come into town but did see them run around the wye and head for Detroit. Note the third unit from the camera, an old GP30 road slug.
    IMG_0638.JPG

A few evenings later, these two units passed through on their way to Toledo. Note the distinctive profile of the trailing unit, SD40-3 #4016:

    Kurt,
Nice catch on the chopnose SD9! Stacks don't look to be capped, so it's still earning its keep?

It's also in a pretty good state. Good paint, seems to be regularly cleaned. Seems to me that it's a daily driver!:)

Yeah, she's lookin' pretty good still, but I think her days are numbered, too many SD40-2's that are now in switching service. :(

Cool! I just read about this run in a history book (Iron Horses by Walter Borneman). Nice to see a photo so well connected to the story.

Yeah, I saw her last year in the Erecting House of the SP Sac Locomotive works which is where the museum stores the off exhibit engines.
This year they put together a really great museum display about the run and then also put together a display for ATSF 347C and have them both in the roundhouse section of the museum for the summer so they had a cohesive narrative.

I really like this kind of stuff the museum does. I wish they could devote more space to it. I mean, I love the permanent displays, but it's the kid's favorite museum so we are there all the time. I need some more ariety.
