I agree with Gerd! Shapeways isn't perfect either but they have made 3D printing possible for us to use. Most of the things they do are still being tested. I don't see anyone else making this possible to do for others to be able to have a SW in Z scale. Everyone wants one, but few have tried to design one that all can do, and works well. There is a lot of work put into Rudy's model and it does look outstanding. Some of you might think of some of the problems with newer models from AZL and MTL not every thing is perfect! I'm not a professional designer either so this is just my opinion! You also have to think about shapeways handing and cleaning also polishing. If they were buffed the friction from and polishing if using some type of drill can heat the brass up and make it distorted a bit. That's just my thought since I have never seen them polish anything! I just know how they have handled so of my models. I just wish I would have done more with the one I started. But it's plastic!!! Thumbs up!!! Rudy!!!!!!! I haven't even started my two yet! I think this post will help all who wants a shot of building there own SW!!!

FYI Marklin does their new br80 steam locomotive shell the same way. It might just be an ideal way to produce low production runs like for z scale. Further more we have seen that it is fairly easy to change the model details, compared to injection molding. I like this way of modeling.

Part 2 of the instructions is live. There are a couple more steps that need to be added concerning the trucks and fuel tanks. Still, this ought to get you guys up and running. Please post your feedback. I'll need plenty of feedback so I can update and revise the instructions for any future modelers. Thanks!

Started taking the shortie apart today working on the second one and found that when Placing the power truck with the pin in the new SW chassis I used a flat jewelers file. It's a little tight at first but after working the file a few time it became loose and then file a little more then tried the pin and it moved really easy. So I didn't have to bend anything and was quite easy to do!

Haven't got my shapeways print in yet, but I started the first part of work on the Shorty. Rudy, I really like your instructions, they leave (almost) nothing unclear sofar.
For the folks that want to build their own SW1200, I would add this recommendation: get the Shinkansen type Shorty, reference number SA002-1 (link) instead of the "normal type" (SA001-1). The latter has more detailed side frames of the trucks. It is more work to sand those and you will not get a very even result. At least I didn't :)

I agree with Matt. You can save yourself some filing and fitting by getting the Shinkansen type Shorty trucks. It looks like the sideframes are designed for that type. The “normal” sideframes are longer and taller than the depressions in the printed sideframes so I had to file them to fit. I tried to approximate the shape of the Shinkansen type. The axles are held by the brass contact strips so you only need the original sideframes to hold the new. There is a clearance depression on the inside of the molded sideframes for the axle point in the brass, I filed into the edge of that depression in a few places. I disassembled the power truck because of all the filing. There are two gears in it that stay in place. I'm generally happy with the way they turned out.

Hi all, I do enjoy this very much (sofar ). My shell isn't ready yet, SW says shipping expected june 21st.

Meanwhile, anyone able and willing to design SP decals? :(:unsure:o_O:love:

Yeah, the 3D printed truck sides were specifically designed for the Shorty Chassis B (Shinkansen). On the back of the faux truck is a lip that helps set the truck at the proper height when mounting it. I'm not sure how that will work out with other Shorty models. It may need to be filed off. In other news, I added a few more steps to the instructions. Looking at the website, it's not clear which Shorty model is required. I'll take care of that. Thanks guys!

Count me in! I need four sets of SP decals if anyone can do it. BTW, you may interested in this link

Thanks Rudy, these instructions are an invitation to get started. I suppose we could ask the folks at CMR to develop decals for the z scale SW1200? They sure offer a lot of Z scale decals already, phew!

You experts should have more fun with it then we do! and I agree with the sanding the trucks! I was thinking of leaving one of the two I have with the trucks not sanded down to see how it looks! I have only one with the detailed trucks!!!!

I have mine painted, assembled and running. I want to do some touch-up painting and put a coat of clear on it. Then I'll post it here.

Here is my SW1200. The big plastic thing over the side window is supposed to be a winter window. I'm thinking they might need to come off.

I would just paint around the edges, make it look better. Milw had these, but only on the engineer's side.

Great job on the build, looks awesome!!!(y)(y)(y)

Looks good! The windows seem to be a little to thick they stick out to much as you already know. I think if you could find some thinner plastic and paint the window frame they might look better. or put the plastic in side and paint the window frame to make it stand out! great job! lets put it to work and start moving some RR cars around!
