Anyone ever make a snow plow? I am thinking of picking up one of these Bachmann HOn30 models and adding a plow to it.
Could be an interesting project. A Maine 2 Foot push plow was fairly small. Not sure how to form the plow's wedge portion.
Back when I was in N-scale, I actually made a pretty sweet Milwaukee Road plow like this, using a Matchbox plow truck that had a snowplow blade with it!! Gave the truck to my 3 year old-win win! Could probably look into model trucks or diecast ones online, never know what you'll find to use.
Well here is my snow plow. I took a Bachmann Thomas and friends HOn30 slate wagon and a little bit of styrene and came up with this.
I am a bit fixated on the Gilpin tramway. But I do not stick to any practices for it seeing as I am doing 3' vs its 2'. But they had a cute snow plow. It would be an easy little project.
Why is the large plow equipped with a flat plate in the front? They *want* the snow to get stuck there, it adds ballast up front where it’s needed to keep the contraption on the rails. Plows don’t just push the snow away, that’s far too heavy. There are subtle curves in the upper section to lift and roll the snow forward. Oddly enough, it works just like a plow designed for dirt.
Look at the measurements on this. Consider that it was likely "scratch built" in their shops for near nothing. It's a tiny plow. The blade is 4x 6 feet.
Indeed, and it probably didn’t work very well in the deep stuff unless they had Champaign powder. It’s a common design, since without the beautiful French curves it’s easy to build. It does, however, get quickly bogged down as snow builds up in front, compacts and eventually stalls the engine. If that’s all the railroad could afford (two 55 gallon drums welded up) I guess it’s better than nothing. Still, it’s real, and a model of a prototype is always correct by definition...
