I didn't get here quite as soon as Rick, so part of the attraction of fallen flag modeling is being able to recreate things that I missed, like steam power on the PM and GTW. At the same time, I find myself attracted to things like RailAmerica and the 20+ patchout schemes seen on Huron and Eastern engines prior to the Genesee and Wyoming takeover along with Brunswick green and gold Detroit and Mackinac C425's. It's because of this and the fact that I like all ages of vintage vehicles (After all, they are the supporting cast for the trains that are our main characters) that I have never been able to settle on one era. (No, I do not mix them all together at once,) but I can't, for example, freeze model time in 1948 to the exclusion of 1955 Fords and Chevys or 1973 Ford pickups. So scrolling the era gives me everything I like and also provides a lot of modeling opportunity in a small space. Just my 2 cents. So, yes I am a fallen flag modeler.

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum, but like a couple of others here, I am interested in the CNE. I am particularly interseted in the start-up years, just after the demise of the P.,R.&N.E. but before the N.Y.,N.H.&H. bought the CNE for the Poughkeepsie Bridge. The mainline runs through my town, and it has railway quite a history.

First off Welcome Rodeo Joe. Good to have you on board. Love NH. Just don't model it. Pretty busy trying to keep up with the Western Roads. Although, I buy up NH freight cars, some NH/REA and a mail storage/baggage car or two.

Question: Here's a GN question for you Sky Blue railfans or model railroaders. Did any of the Orange and Green or Sky Blue passenger equipment ever get as far south as Sacramento or Stockton? Over the Highline down to Keddie Wye primarily hosted by the Western Pacific?

Possibly, but not as a part of any regularly scheduled GN passenger service.

That's what I thought. Maybe an railroad officer's special or they rode in on the W.P. passenger trains but thinking not much else. Found a picture I can't share here, no permission, of a GN Green and Orange livery sitting in front of the W.P. Passenger Station, Sacramento, CA. Just not sure why?

No and I should of added I can't find it now.
I was hoping someone else might have a private shot.

A fellow model railroader and now retired truck driver said he saw GN through Klamath Falls, Oregon. Indicating passenger trains running to and from CA.,. Gualifying them as mostly mail trains with some passenger cars tied on to the rear. After hearing that my interest perked up and I've been about proving the story...or not, ever since.

Most quotes imply it was a freight line only from Klamath Falls Oregon, to Bieber, Ca and connecting with the Western Pacific at Keddie, Ca. Then down to Sacramento and Stockton.

Here's where my research started, check out the map. The line down (two of them) to northern California. Something about that just doesn't look right.

My next step in this adventure took me here: https://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr2959.htm

The last dig found this picture of a GN RPO car at the California Railroad Museum, Sacramento, Ca. Correction, California State Railroad Museum.

That doesn't count. I'm looking for a GN Green and Orange livery passenger car in front of either the Sacramento or Stockton WP Train Station. There is some sort of celebration going on. Railroad Days, New Train Service and/or any of a number of reasons to have GN equipment down in the State of California.

Then, then I found this statement: ""The Great Northern Railway was the second company to reach Seattle doing so in 1893. ... an important connection with the Western Pacific in Northern California. .... 1888 (regular passenger trains began plying the route on July 17, 1889)."" Author is unknown. Here's the link provided: https://www.american-rails.com/great-northern-railway.html
However, the article refers to completion of the southern extension and joining with WP at Bieber, CA the year of 1891. To prove said quote above, I need a train schedule from that time/era.

It's no big deal and having fun with it more then anything else.

The line between Wishram (originally "Fallbridge"), Washington and Bend, Oregon was not GN. It was Oregon Trunk Railway. OT was a part of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle RY family, which SP&S was co-owned by GN and NP- until the BN Merger on March 2, 1970, but SP&S/OT were always operated independently of their parent companies. SP&S/OT had their own passenger equipment.

That line was not completed, as I recall, between Bend and Klamath Falls, Oregon, and on to Bieber, CA, (point where WP and GN met), until the late 1920's, but this track was GN, not SP&S, which might seem confusing to some folks. From what I am aware, Bend to K Falls never had a regular passenger service, just mixed trains. These had become "irregular" well before WWII, and were gone before the time frame of modern streamline cars and colors we are discussing here.

It is possible SP&S would "borrow" some cars, to head south of Wishram, but those would have not gone beyond Bend, in any normal passenger use.....

I figured if anyone knew it would be you. Everything I've looked at aside from the resource links I provided say the same thing.

I too model a fallen flag the Missouri Pacific. Actually it was larger than the parent railroad. But due to ICC they decided to keep the name of its lessor instead of calling it the Pacific Railroad System.

I am both a modeler of the Northern Pacific and am a member of the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association (NPRHA). Since I was 5 years old in 1955, my parents built a cabin in central Minnesota so I spent hundreds hours in the car, traveling alongside the Northern Pacific's main line between the Twin Cities and Motley, Minnesota (Up Nort) as they say, even though it really was Central Minnesota. For people from the Twin Cities, Up North was anywhere North of the Twin Cities! So the Northern Pacific was pretty much my "Home Road". I remember the names trains, like the "Vista Dome North Coast Limited" and the "Main Streeter". In 1955, I'm sure that steam was still around and I do remember steam on the N.P.

I specifically model the N.P. in 1953; so, I can model the transition and run both steam locomotives and 1st generation diesels. However, being a John Allen Fan, and loving the mountains myself, I have modeled the Butte Shortline, from Logan Montana through Butte, to Garrison Montana. The scenery on my layout was built before I chose to be a prototype modeler, so the scenery on my layout is freelanced; but, the line is prototype. I have locomotives and rolling stock as would be seen on the N.P. in the time period modeled. My layout is going on 32 years old!

"Northern Pacific, Really Terrific" that's what everyone who rides it says!

Gotta love the NP! I had no childhood connection to it, but my wife liked the passenger schemes and it allowed me to get back into model railroading after many years out of it. Came to love it as much as a long term admirer.

I model N scale Frisco primary and have power for Missouri Pacific and Santa Fe. Would like to get power for Kansas City Southern and Rock Island. Most of these interchanged with Frisco in Ft Smith or Van Buren Arkansas on Frisco's Central Division. My layout is called Boston Mountains Sub Division running from Ft Smith to Winslow Tunnel in northwestern Arkansas. It is in our spare bedroom and goes around the room using 11 modules that are 36 to 58 inches long and 12 inches wide. The mainline is 33 feet long with a small yard and several industry Spurs. Module 05 is the only one that has scenery at this time but should have module 06 sceniced tomorrow afternoon.

How can you not like the N.P.? I love Montana, so it make sense for me to model the Northern Pacific. I have heard said that if a vote where taken the N.P.'s Loewy designed paint scheme for the N.P. Passenger equipment would win the contest.
