As I may have mentioned in prior posts, the fellas area after me to finish the three buildings that hide risers in Renton. The first was the Old Milwaukee Substation. The second is Wesco Supply, one of the nation's leading distributors of automotive painting equipment and supplies. They sell to independent auto shops and have their own chain of stores.

I'm starting with a foamcore base, just like I used in the prior build.

The long side will have multiple bays for train car access. I expect at least 5 doors on this wall. I decided to try the same material we used for the Maple Valley backdrop, a photo on sticky back paper. A while ago I drove around looking at walls that might be representative. I took several photos, settling on one. I had the printer put it on 6x33 inch paper.

    Here's an up close view:

Tonight I started to fab the office area. As per usual I drew up what I had in mind then set to work. I used Evergreen styrene for this section. The first part was the second story. I used thin metal siding here, with a separator made from 3/16 square.

Once I was satisfied with the fit, I started on the storefront. Using 030 sheet, I cut the shape out and then transferred marks where the windows should be from my drawing to the styrene. I used the Nibbler to cut the rough window shapes then finished each one off with a file.

The last steps for this evening were getting the door built. I used .25 L channel for this piece. It's just a simple frame to give the storefront another area of visual interest.

Before calling it a night I sanded the door structure so it sat level, then glued on a 010 styrene front to cover the seams.

That's it for tonight. But a couple of thoughts on the way out. Sanding is a big deal when it comes to structures. I use a 1ft square piece of 100 grit adhered to a piece of melamine with double stick tape. It has rubber feet to keep it from sliding around. I also use the Northwest Short Line tru-sander, that gadget is indispensable. They no longer make them but Micromark does if you're interested.

    Thanks for checking in.

More work today on the Wesco building. Started by putting in door frames on the storefront.

    Then added some stairs.

A test fit on the office face, including an office interior shot like we do on a regular basis.

Finally I added the photo paper to the long side of the building.

Both the top and bottom edges will get much needed edge trim and I am heading to the LHS tomorrow to get smaller L channel for the corners and the drip edge. As you can see in the picture, I have a piece of 1/8th L on top of the bump out, but I feel it's too large for the intended purpose, so off I go to get the correct size.

    More tomorrow....

Nope, standard 123 Blocks, I purchased mine off eBay, but Amazon has them (just one example below). They're fantastic, you can get them without holes too.

Spent more time this evening working on Wesco Supply. First I completed the North Wall trim, flashing and foundation. Then took it into the garage and painted the trim and flashing light gray metallic, followed by dullcote before the evening was done. I'll come back and paint the foundation concrete color later. I temporarily put it back in place for this picture.

I also hit the storefront with its first shot of primer.

    Later trimmed out the windows.

And finally started to fabricate the west wall and mock up where the trailer bays will sit.

    More this weekend.

A mixed bag tonight. Reynold spent time cleaning track then decided to weather some flat cars. He's using my assortment of Tamiya Accent Color washes.

Doug continued his work on the hillside under Mt. Rainier.

He then took off some of the weathering on our concrete ties. I much prefer this look, he did a great job.

Scott completed the rebuild of his railfanning scene with some foliage on the chain link fence.

I continued to fabricate the Wesco Building. I started by adding foam supports to some of the inner wall sections. Shoring these up really adds rigidity to the structure.

I then completed the office and west wall sections of the building.

As you can see I also cut out the foam behind the truck bays so if I decide to, I can detail a scene on the interior. After taking this shot I took the styrene portion into the house for a quick cleaning, then gave it its' first coat of primer.

That's it for now, thanks for checking in. M

Another evening in the books for the RGW crew. Scott, Ed, Doug and Rey continued their respective projects as outlined last week. The picture I took of Scott's work was blurred so here's a better shot of that.

Wain surprised us with a visit tonight and spent the evening adding scenery effects along the concrete tie mainlines.

In this shot he used real dirt to simulate erosion from the excavated hillside.

As for me, I completed the painting of the office section of Wesco Supply, then started putting it all back together. I glued the window front into the entry way and attached the storefront in place.

Once I had it all back together I put it in place for measurements.

The measurements were needed to begin adding the loading dock. I then went back to the desk and started putting that together before running out of time and calling it a night.

The building clearly needs all the loading doors to be installed. I have them and they'll get put in place soon.

Thanks again for your continued interest.

Was able to finish the Wesco loading dock yesterday and painted it today. Had one last rattle can of Floquil concrete so I used it here. After that dried I brought it out to the train room for weathering.

After a coat of Testors Clear, I began with a wash of Vallejo black brown mixed with about 80% rubbing alcohol. Followed by a mix of Vallejo rust, medium rust and dark rust.

I also made up a wash of Vallejo mud brown, sand and acrylic thinner to address dirt splashing up onto the dock from trains and heavy rains.

I brushed some of the dark wash on the concrete foundation of the building and on the sides. Much more to go, but a good start.

Fun night tonight as everyone was making progress on their respective projects. Doug continued to make headway on the hillside under Mt Rainier, by adding a Chooch flexible wall to the sheer wall.

Scott started a new project, doing some finish detail on the Edwards and Bradford lumber yard. He rebuilt some of the piping that we disassembled many moons ago and added catwalks to the log skid. He also began to tackle the final positioning of the burner.

The method he's using is to lay down sufficient real dirt to then push in the structure and create a footprint. Then remove the structure and glue the footprint in place. It is any easy process and long overdue.

Once it dries we can scenic around the area with static grass and then replace the burner without doing it any harm.

Wain continued scenery on the Maple Valley backdrop tracks.

We then held a discussion of how to scenic the buffer area. We decided on deciduous trees and tall grasses.

Rey was busy adding couplers to several new cars he's working on.

As for me, I cut the loading dock doors out of the Wesco building. I then built styrene inserts to cover the visible foam core.

I'm looking forward to getting the inserts and doors painted and installed

That's it for tonight; as always, thank you for checking in.
