Three Cumberland, MD area towers stood when we visited.

Mexico Tower controlled the east end of the large yard at Cumberland. It was closed in July 1996. Still stands the last I heard.

Q Tower at Hyndman, PA was at the base of the eastern slope of Sand Patch. Gone.

Cumberland, MD is also the home of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. At the time of one of our visits (2008), the WMSR operated a fine looking LS&I 2-8-0.

Did we have a "rent a wreck" thread?

    Not wrecks, but lease power.

Are we generally cleaning? Or trying to remove a bit of paint?

The car collected some graffiti while stored at the Amtrak yard in Beach Grove. We are also removing the Amtrak stripes and logos to be replaced with the original Southern Pacific paint and lettering. I was working on getting the end doors working properly along with other projects inside the car.
The car when it was in route to Texas.

Some 25 miles northwest of Cumberland at Meyersdale, PA stood the Western Maryland's Salisbury Viaduct, crossing the B&O main and the Casselman River. Completed in 1912 at 1900 FT in length it remains an imposing sight. It was abandoned in 1975, but its enormous size somehow gave it immunity to quick demolition. It still stands today and is a legal hiking attraction from what I gather. The WM was a highly engineered railroad built with an eye to expansion and the bents under Salisbury were built to allow a second track to be added if needed.
