Doing some cleaning out of my mother's basement and am gathering up some of my Lionel and memorabilia. Although the J is postwar and the reproduction sign is prewar, I liked that the sign's length matches the J and set them up together. I like the look and even found a friendly engineer to add to the scene. :)

:) For certain! I still like looking at Lionel at train shows and discovered that thousands of very affordable reproduction repair parts are available. The Vendors are extremely helpful and I've been able to get a number of things running again. I have precious little space, so have sold much of what I once had, but have no regrets. Another item I'll always keep is my GG-1, a total beast. With two motors, Magne-Traction and its heavy weight, I think it could pull the house down.

And you can never tell what might be hiding in your own proverbial backyard.
Last year I went to an estate sale in a home nearby and was amazed to see in the basement a massive Lionel layout powered by four ZW transformers.

The sign and the J look great together. It's nice that you still have these 2 post-war locomotives, and they are in great shape.

That tender looks very similar to the one that goes behind my uncle's Lionel 1950s-vintage 4-6-4 Hudson, of which I had custody until about a year ago.

I took a look at [ http://tandem-associates.com/lionel/lioneltenders02.htm#PAGE2 ] to learn more and you're right. Lionel introduced the type in 1950 and used it with a number of different locomotives. The 746W that shipped with the N&W J came painted in two stripe lengths. The short stripe version (like mine) is the most common and the long stripe version which is harder to find. I think a "W" in the catalog number signified a built-in whistle in Lionel tender models.

I hope you're able to regain the Hudson. It's a beautiful model.
