The locomotive is at Lawrenceburg and is numbered 7301. That was an 0-6-0. It was scrapped in 1929. The photo was taken somewhat before 1918 with the 5 men lined up on the front. Both of the men on the ends are Dan Jones great grandfathers. Left is Ben Garman, right is Grover Thornton. Dan Jones supplied the photo.
The second locomotive is a 2-8-0 and was built somewhere in 1905 to 1912. The location is unknown. It was taken later. The man on the ground is Ben Garman.
Jim, I believe that was to accommodate Stephenson valve timing control rods which were actuated by eccentric cams mounted on a forward axle.
