All too often, these people noted above are mere figureheads. Even so, they should not need to know how to run any government agency.

If government was run like a business, which is what should always happen, (and does not), then these business people would be valuable. Those mundane things a business must do, like having a business plan, a budget, paying bills in full plus on time and worst requisite of them all, showing a profit to continue existing. Such as with Amtrak, which cannot sustain itself, and is unable bank money to maintain, not to mention grow. As to USPS, versus what is found in the public sector... Hmmm. $60 billion in losses the past decade and double that in unfunded future liabilities. To not try reining in such a disastrous situation, we might as well have no Postmaster General at all.

BTW- Let us remember TrainBoard Rules and shy far away from politics.

Coming from a perspective of a husband of a Postal Carrier I can say that the post office can run well, depending on who is running it. My wife's first office was run by a very good manager and things were smooth, and the people got their mail when they were expecting. The people working there were happy. She moved to another post office a ways away because the prospect of becoming a regular carrier was greater there than as a clerk where she was. And she did make regular rather quickly... but... In the 5 years she was there, that office went through 3 (4) post masters. The first guy was retiring and really didn't care any more. Things were ok. Next post master was good, got things organized and the place was running smooth. She got moved to another trouble spot to fix that place and the 3rd post master in as many years came onboard. This post master allowed sexual harassment to run free and was part of the problem, when the union would request an investigation they would ask the post master to investigate (with nothing ever found of course as she was one of the harassing members). After 2 years and many many complaints from about a dozen employees including my wife this postmaster was relieved and replaced by the same post master that got the place running good. She tried to keep my wife on as she really liked how my wife worked, but at this point my wife was so done with everything. So yea the post office can run good, and the same office can be a mess.

If you look at how the people who are in charge of things like FEMA, the USPS, and the various other offices in the gov, you will see that it's not about who knows how to do what most of the time. While in college I took a class in emergency management. Of course the topic of FEMA came up, and how FEMA directors are appointed by the president. Since FEMA has been a thing, only 1 person who has headed the agency has actually been an emergency management specialist. That was during Ronald Regan's presidency. In that time we had Hurricane Andrew (I believe it was Andrew) and a major and very destructive earthquake in CA, and both of those were handled very well and quickly. Cant say the same when Isabel hit or Katrina. Both of those Hurricanes were handled under the same director, and both were botched. Granted Isabel was not the same as Katrina but FEMA was supposed to be helping with both. I was at ground zero for Isabel and when the news reported that someone was granted temporary shelter for some minor roof damage, but FEMA denied a family that lost their entire house (tree split it in 2), because of a paperwork error?!?!? Paperwork be damned. Give the roof people a tarp (or they can go buy one themselves they were not poor) and give the family a hotel or camper to live in while they get their house fixed or something... paperwork is not that important.

Any way you look at it, until the gov gives those jobs to those who are qualified and not to special interests of the president, and if those jobs were really jobs and not as temporary as a president then we are going to be forever mismanaged and disappointed. Even though Regan got the FEMA director right, there were several others that didn't do anything but promote the size of their own bank accounts with the position they were granted S&L anyone?

My son's experience with the USPS has been astonishing. His package to me was accepted at the Lewes, DE PO Monday week ago for two-day delivery. It arrived at the Philadelphia, PA distribution center on Saturday, ~150 miles away. It departed Philly this morning. I'm expecting it sometime next year.

Another package he sent to northern VA from the Lewes PO also on Monday, was posted as Arrived/Departed at Bismark, ND this past Thursday. The Bismark date/time stamp for the Arrived post was one minute before the Departed post. Even a computer glitch could not be that bad considering how far North Dakota is from Virginia or Delaware.

Wal-Mart management and trucks arrived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast 18 hours after the National Hurricane Center declared that the danger had past. FEMA management showed up five days later, and their worker bees and supplies arrived a few days later. Even a squadron of Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived before FEMA.

The USS Bataan rode the storm up the coast and was there helping even while the storm was in progress. Captain Tyson did this against orders from Norfolk. The ship suffered some minor damage due to the storm, but was there with medical supplies, and fresh water. They rescued people and had boots on the ground from the beginning. This is how a response should be handled. Cpt. Tyson became Rear Admiral Tyson for her actions during Katrina. The then current president did nothing even after the Navy sent a carrier and another amphibious support ship (one of Bataan's sisters), and didn't do anything for a week (maybe two) after.

My wife served on the USS Bataan before this happened and really liked Cpt Tyson. I was in training after Katrina with several Bataan sailors that were there during Katrina and I never heard any of them say anything bad about Cpt Tyson.

Ad filers such as these are usually drop shipped at a postal location. It could be a bulk mail facility or at the local postal unit. One regional LTL common carrier i worked for for handled adds such as these and we got them presorted by zip code on pallets from a truckload carrier that we had to break down and deliver to the local post offices. I can't tell you how many times we received the ads after the sales had ended. Might not be the USPS fault on these things.

Well packages from us to relatives 160 miles away have not reached them and in turn their packages to us have not reached here, same distance, and all were mailed 2 weeks ago. Orders from vendors made a month ago have not arrived, One order has laid in the post office for over two weeks and just shipped but is very slow making it's way here. Christmas will be still going on in January. One order made for the Missus has turned into a birthday gift because it is that delayed.

On the he other hand, we bought a couple pounds of fancy mixed nuts at a local confectioners yesterday afternoon and had them shipped to my brother in Indiana. They really weren't a surprise, and we weren't in a hurry for him to get them. Even so, he received them before 3:00 pm EST today. I'm assuming they were shipped FedEx but I can't say for sure.

Over a week now... Picturing a small package crushed under mountains of other packages, the weight of which will soon cause glacial flowage out the loading dock doors and into the parking lot.

Everything in Illinois is screwed up. Everything... I wouldn't be surprised if your part sits in Chicago for a few weeks, gets kicked around and when you do get in in March, it will be a part for a Prius.

Got to love the People's Republic of Illinois.

Both my wife and I receive as a monthly subscription, our health supplements. Typically they are auto shipped on the 15th of every month and USPS has them arrive at my door within 3-5 business days. Last month the order shipped the 15th, sat in Atlanta for three days, went to Indy, spent three days, went to Champaign IL, sat four days, went back to Atlanta, sat a day, went back to Indy, spent a day, back to Champaign for 48 hours, then out for delivery for three days. This month my auto ship left on the 16th and has been sitting in Atlanta since. The tracking says LATE.

Meanwhile, Amazon. I ordered a gift basket for my parents in God's Country New Hampshire on a Tuesday. Tracking said it would arrive that Saturday. Cool. I called my Dad Saturday morning to let him know to expect an Amazon van to which he replied, Oh they were here Friday.

I know I hear a lot about how evil Amazon is but they run (my experience) like a well oiled machine and all the drivers save one, I have met at the door have been kind and courteous. My wife hates it, but I have the Amazon App on my phone and I order at least one or twice a week from it for the sheer convenience, not to mention I have Amazon Prime which allows me to see what I want to see, not what the $140.00 a month cable company wants me to see. As GNR said, "Take it for what it is."

My brother who had a 35+ year career as a manager at a hub is so glad he retired a few years ago.

Thankfully the part from IN is going to be here today. 3 of the other 4 packages are also in my local OP. The parts from CA, which were the closest to me are only in OR and it has been 4 days now.
