Hello, What would be the recommended sound only decoder(s) + speaker to install in a n-scale freight car such as this one for example:
Soundtraxx has a sound-car decoder, and ESU is coming out with one this spring. The big trick on installing sound-car decoders is changing the trucks to allow for power pickup. Boxcars are typically easier to convert (and hide wires) than hoppers.
Digitrax has the SFX006 and SFX0416.. The SFX006 is marketed as HO scale but will fit in many N-scale freight cars. The SFX0416 is marketed as N-scale and is quite a bit smaller. There are probably others, but I don't know right off hand. You can also use a regular sound and motor control decoder if there is one you like.
I've read about the MRC1909 and saw a Youtube video about it....apparently, it sounds pretty decent with a better speaker And XL Systems inc sells the 1909.......for $20 !
If you don't want to spend much and just get your feet wet maybe one of these... http://xlsystemsdcc.com/product-category/n-scale/ ... I've only read about them so no personal experience but have considered trying one with no expectations that it would be anywhere near what a premium decoder would offer. Anyone ever try one of these? Sum
When you use a sound only decoder in a boxcar....do you give it the same address than the locomotive?
It really just depends on what your preference is, some people use the same address as a locomotive and some people use a different address and consit it with a locomotive. If there is only one loco you'll be using it with, it may make more sense to use the same address, but if you plan to use it with different locos it may be more convenient to use a different address and consist them.
