Good morning from mostly sunny and cold Northeast Ohio!

Got a couple of more cars done this week!

Completed another Kadee PS 2003CF Covered Hopper, painted with Scalecoat II MOW Gray paint and lettered with Decals from the Ann Arbor Historical Society. These were among the first cars acquired after the DT&I acquired the Annie from the Wabash and used the now familiar DT&I style lettering. Cars were used in moving cement from the Dundee MI cement plant and sand from the Yuma, MI sand pit to the Ford Casting Plant in Brookpark, OH.

Exactrail late Evans 5277CF Boxcar Kit, painted with Scalecoat II ATSF Red and Silver Paints, then lettered with Highball Graphics decals. The D&H acquired these 1974 built cars from one of the NRUC railroads in 1979 and painrted them in the new simplified D&H scheme, most were in boxcar red, but I found a picture of one of them in bright red paint.

Last week I took my D&TSL GP7's to the club with a mixed freight, they ran well especially after I changed out all the broken gears and replaced them with Athearn replacements.

    Thanks for looking!

That air raid siren is a nice touch, really sets the era. Ours were on the water towers, but maybe that was just a California thing ?

I found that kit on line years ago. A very easy kit. I don't know if it's still around. But I knew it fit my era.

Oh it is ! Youtube link

I've seen these still in use for emergency warning near nuclear power plants and something very similar at a fire house.

The air raid sirens at the firehouses have and are part of my life. In our neck of the woods, Delaware County, PA the sirens are used by volunteer fire companies to summon members to the fire house for calls. My father was a member of Samuel M Vauclain Fire Company in Lieperville, PA. If you know Baldwin Locomotives you may recognize the name as president of the company. He got the fire company their first pumper, a horse drawn steam pumper, that they still have today. The fire company was housed on the Baldwin Plant Grounds util the mid 1950’s.

Now back to photos. Here is the state of the layout on Friday. Four layers of 1-inch foam board installed on one board and the next board ready. So far this weekend I installed two layers on the second board.

When I lived in Toledo, Lucas County used to have our company install twelve of those sirens all around the county on poles for tornado warnings every year. It was a nice fill in project for our line crews.

The siren on the water tower wasn't just a California thing. In the small Michigan town where I grew up, we had two volunteer fire departments. The siren was a large one and sat in its own little open sided house halfway up the water tower. It could be heard for several miles out into the countryside. If the siren was started and allowed to scream until the first firefighter arrived, it was calling the Brockway township fire department to fight a fire in the surrounding rural area. Continuous up and down blasts signaled the Yale city fire department that the fire was inside the city limits. On rare occasions when the fire was very serious, both signals would be sounded. When several firefighers had arrived, the trucks would leave. The location of the fire would be written on a chalkboard inside the fire hall so that firefighters who arrived afterward could proceed there in their own vehicles. The fire siren also blew one blast every day to announce the noon hour and doubled as a tornado siren when needed. On the other hand, I'm not sure we were ever regarded as much of an air raid target other than possibly the local woolen mill perhaps being an industrial target during World War II.

Yes, no problem. I will try to get a photo of it tonight. It is what I call the Water Tower Diorama and is the first diorama I did about 12- 14 years ago. It is beat up a little now and once I reinsert into the layout it will get some needed TLC. I have been using it for the last year or so as the backdrop for my Modeling Weekend Photo Fun thus all my current photos have trains in them. I need to take a few without the trains.

The water tower and shed are from the Atlas Water Tower kit. I forget who the outhouse is made by. The fuel tank and barrels are castings and again my memory does not recall the maker.

Nicely done !!! The water tank is really cool. Very realistic. Are you doing the 1950s?

I grew up in IL tornado country and even though I moved away long ago, the sound of similar sirens still chills me. Some years ago, certain NFL teams decided that it'd be funny to play an air raid siren after a long pass play and I have the same reaction. Not very funny.

    Thank you.

My main focus is on the transition era of the 1940's and 1950's. I do have some moments where I wander into the 1920's and 30's. Sometimes I go through a 1970's thing that way I can sneak in Penn Central, Chessie, and Reading stuff that I grew up watching either from my backyard (B&O, Reading, Chessie) or my aunt's front yard (PRR and Penn Central).
