    Look at the prices on those whistles. What they go for today, they are worth their weight in gold!

    Absolutely. I was contacted by someone who had an Ashton 3 chime whistle and it was appraised at $10,000 dollars!

    The sound of a distant steam whistle should be declared a wonder of the world.

    They still sound a whistle here at the Hormel plant at the same hours as they always have for decades. When the new plant was built in the eighties, since heat was no longer steam, they installed an air compressor big enough to supply pressure to the whistle so it would work the same as it always had.

    I guess it sounds pretty much the same to me, from a distance. Maybe up close there's more of a difference.

    My thought was that dry air and moist steam can each produce a different result in a whistle.
