I finally found a proper sized N scale ship for my harbor. It is a model of an inter coastal freighter that measures 130 N scale feet long. https://www.ebay.com/itm/333994385979?hash=item4dc39de23b:g:hIEAAOSw5T9eSYN0 The ship is now in hand and being converted to a mother ship for the fishing fleet and is loosely based on this. Img014-1-2-1 by John Moore posted Apr 29, 2021 at 8:54 AM Here is the model with the sardine carrier in the back that was the mother ship and a fishing boat alongside. 100_1108-3 by John Moore posted May 3, 2021 at 8:32 PM I have modified the hatch covers already and designed a mainmast for it and made a few other changes. 100_1127-4 by John Moore posted May 8, 2021 at 8:43 PM Making my own booms. 100_1128-1 by John Moore posted May 10, 2021 at 11:34 AM And the new hatch covers and the refrigeration unit and duct work feeding the 8 holds for keeping the fish under refrigeration. 100_1129-2 by John Moore posted May 10, 2021 at 7:09 PM The role of this ship is to bring supplies to the fishing fleet and take the catch back to the cannery allowing the smaller fishing vessels to stay out longer. I am thinking of getting another to make into a small fuel tanker and retiring the fuel barge that is currently used at the power plant.
Thank you yet more to do. Railings, the main mast and booms, anchor and anchor chain, searchlights, boat davits and the life boats to mention a few plus touch up paint here and there.
Well did a little more to the ship. Added a section of railing, fore and aft flag staffs with running lights atop them, hatchway doors and ladders. 100_1131-1 by John Moore posted May 12, 2021 at 7:05 PM In the mid section shot of the well deck I have added a hatchway coming from the superstructure and two more ladders. The container with the green liquid contains my just arrived from Shapeways life boats and davits. The green liquid is Simple Green a strong cleaning solution. 100_1132-2 by John Moore posted May 12, 2021 at 7:05 PM The stern shot shows the added hatchways coming from the pilot house and stairs plus an added hatch on the aft cabin. This is the area the lifeboat davits will be mounted. 100_1133-3 by John Moore posted May 12, 2021 at 7:05 PM The Hull has received a coat of Vallejo dark blue. The parts soaking in the Simple Green will stay in it overnight. Still more to be done including mounting the lifeboats and adding railing plus more paint touch up and adding the mainmast and booms plus things on the pilot house roof.
Your model is looking shipshape . . . yes, it's lame but it's the best I could come up with on short notice.
Got the lifeboat davits installed and made outboard motors for the lifeboats. Installed some more ladders and finished installing life rings, and got the running lights the right colors. And finally installed the mainmast. The mainmast was set into over sized holes to allow for adjustments. Fast dry putty was placed in the holes and then the mast sunk into that and adjusted. When the putty is dry a little ACC will hold it in place. 100_1135-1 by John Moore posted May 13, 2021 at 6:33 PM 100_1136-2 by John Moore posted May 13, 2021 at 6:33 PM Next up is to attach the lifeboats to the davits and attach 4 booms to the main mast and then rig the booms. When I received the ship there were several extras included with it, a cabin cruiser, and 4 military vehicles. The cabin cruiser became a NUMA dive boat. 100_1114-1 by John Moore posted May 6, 2021 at 3:02 PM The other vehicles were two Jeeps, a 6 by, and a Duck. 100_1111-1 by John Moore posted May 4, 2021 at 7:00 PM Waiting in the wings for building is a water taxi or in my case a passenger ferry. 100_1106-2 by John Moore posted May 3, 2021 at 8:32 PM
Today I managed to get the cargo booms mounted along with the boom rests. Still have life boats and rigging to do. 100_1139-2 by John Moore posted May 14, 2021 at 5:46 PM Started masking the windows on the next ferry boat. 100_1143-4 by John Moore posted May 14, 2021 at 5:46 PM And these small temple buildings were part of the ferry boat kit. 100_1141-3 by John Moore posted May 14, 2021 at 5:46 PM
Finished the fishing fleet mother ship and here it is with the fleet. 100_1144-1 by John Moore posted May 15, 2021 at 9:09 PM Finished the booms this morning and rigged the cables to them. Both life boats were also mounted and a flag added. The boom tips are painted along with the boom rests for visibility while at sea in the fog and mist. 100_1145-2 by John Moore posted May 15, 2021 at 9:09 PM Mother ships take on the catch to return to harbor and carry supplies like replacement nets etc. In addition the mother ship has sick bay capable of tending to any medical needs of the fleet. Now I just need to rustle up a crew for her.
Thankyou used to have more. But I took several and kit bashed them into larger vessels. The small one is from a couple of leftover parts. Some of the parts left over from the kit bashing found a new home on the mother ship.
