Drove into the side of a moving train? Parked too close to the tracks? Either way, physics is a cruel mistress.

The SOU's Asheville, NC depot was razed in the 1960s. Two miles away, the SOU's smaller Biltmore, NC station still stands as a restaurant and I find that many "historians" identify the Biltmore station as the Asheville station, which is totally incorrect. Passenger service ended in Asheville in 1975.

Hi Boxcab, not real sure on the story of these tank cars. They are behind the old St. Mary's RR office building. It looks like this building is not being used by the railroad and that the lot next to it is a loading point for some kind of tourist type train. That lot was locked so I couldn't get to the cars from there and had to take that shot from an adjacent parking lot. Will try and get a pic of the building posted in the next day or two is possible. I will add that the St. Mary's is an active short line but what I didn't know is they are running some kind of tourist type train and they do have some interesting equipment parked around. Much of it was hard to see so makes me wonder if it is as much a 1:1 collection as it is a real RR.

Looks like an interesting place @BNSF FAN .

The St. Mary's RR was once owned by Gilman Paper and serviced their large mill for more than a generation, but corruption, safety and environmental troubles led to the mill's sale and eventual closure in 2002. The 700+ Acre property was wiped clean of Gilman's presence; I don't know what exists on the land today. The USN tank cars you saw may have once seen service with the nearby Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base which remains a vitally important facility.

The road also owned a large number of per-diem boxcars back in the day .... which I somehow never got a picture of even one

NS hit a landscaping truck at a grade crossing at Kings Mountain, NC on Friday. Not sure of the circumstances, but the workers evacuated the truck in plenty of time and nobody at the scene was hurt. Here's someone's cell phone shot.

Thanks. I was wondering about that. I don't have a Facebook account, so use my wife's to look at a railroad-oriented site there.

Looks like the two old-timers are checking out the new kid on the block.:)

Interesting composition, with the colorful FT set front and center, with the two steamers and the backdrop sort of toned down, even drab, to bring out the shiny new engines.(y)

As seen 10/15/1995, the former B&O CA Tower located at Terra Alta, WV atop the Cranberry Grade between here and Rowlesburg, VW. We're 63 railroad miles west of Cumberland, MD. Sadly, CSX demolished CA in 2011. Inside was a 56 Lever GRS Model 2 Pistol Grip interlocking machine. :(

Here's MK Tower at Rowlesburg, WV as seen 10/20/1994. It's gone too. It sat at M&K Jct., named for a connection with the Morgantown & Kingwood RR, which the B&O later took control of in the 1920s. The Cranberry Grade to Terra Alta is to the east and the Cheat River Grade begins here to the west. This is all very remote country.
