Picked up this new release from M/T Friday. I didn't really notice at first but then it hit e that this is in a foam nest instead of the usual plastic nest that the car rest in. So, is this foam something new from M/T or is it just a new to me thing. Good with it, just curious. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's Penn Central..... don't judge
What, I like Penn Central. It still brings back fond memories of my youth as a beginning railfan. My favorite paint scheme on the GG1 was the mating worms.
I suspect they use foam when cars require packing and they don't already have a plastic nest formed to adequately protect the car/load. I've received several recent releases from them and they still use the traditional packing unless the cars have unusual loads. The 89' flat car with wrecked well car comes to mind as one of their foam packed jewel cases.
^^^ What he said. A "virtual two pack" (two road numbers, individual items) of Canadian National flat cars with construction equipment loads were packaged that way, back in June 2013.
I was recently looking at a Micro-Trains Southern 50' flatcar with 2 tractor loads. It's also packed in foam. That was the first MTL car I ever saw packaged in foam.
There's been a few over the years packed in foam, usually cars with loads. And my first engine was a Marx 0-4-0 in Penn Central.
How about the jewel box and lid? I never saw a lid shaped like that. The shape looks like the roof of some of the school auditoriums being built these days.
The lid is normal. You're just seeing the curved soft plastic piece that fits between the car and the lid.
Here is another new release that came with a foam nest as well. However, I have a different question this time. Does anyone know what brand/model of tractor that is M/T offering is based on?
I was just reading the March UMTRR and George does note that the flat car that this Southern flat represents is at the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer and has some Allis Chalmers tractors on it. That makes me lean even more toward them being AC's. Good call Shortround!
Does anyone know what orange paint I can use for the a/c orange? Hmm... orangutan orange goes with anything...
I grew up with the older ones. They were a medium orange, completely. Then they went to a more yellowish shade. With the hood side panels, grill and rims an off white. Also the top of the canopy. Our John Deere A was of course green and the Farmall H was red and white.
I have an N Scale brass U30C that had the yellow foam, that melted and stuck to the locomotive over the decades ruining the paint. I think it took between 10-15 years, but I don't trust foam anymore. I use cotton batting and paper towels now.
totally understand. This foam is designed for packaging and we've been using it for 12 years at least...so far so good. Hope all is well with you....the Venus is still cooking away at home LOL Joe
Good to hear your Venus is still working, my 12W Venus is collecting dust, the C180 running strong, and I have a new 50W Fiber Laser to cut small metal parts now. Good to hear from you Joe!
