New to the group and hope I am doing this correctly. My question is: What is the best way to go about installing those pesky tabs on the back of the sun shades so that the shade lines up with the cab wall? Thank you.
Those are tricky for sure! Slots are a tad too small, IIRC. I think I've only installed one set so far and they took a bit of fussing. Can't recall exactly what I did but I probably (very carefully) enlarged the slots ever-so-slightly with an Xacto knife with (probably) a #11 blade.
Clear off the paint on the side of the tabs with a hobby knife blade to get to bare metal to start and test fit. Like tehachapifan said you might still have to open up the slot side a little more with a #11 blade. Shouldn't need much though.
Thank you. Just did two that way and was hoping there was a better way. I have four more to do. Called Intermountain and they actually had no suggestion on how to do it. I like your name, haven't been there since 1975.
OK, its been many years, 14, since I did mine. If you are talking about the metal detail parts cut the fret at the spine rather at the part. Drill holes to accept the remaining pieces and glue in. If you leave enough you can bend them inside the cab for extra holding strength.
The IM tunnel motors came with their own sunshades with a tab that is supposed to insert into a slot in the cab. The tab is a bit too large for the slots on some locos. Actually, the sunshades themselves also seemed a bit oversized to me too.
I’m posting this just in case someone else might have encountered this problem and may be looking for ideas on how to insert those sun shades. I ground down one side (opposite the teeth) of an Xacto saw blade to make a nice narrow saw that would fit horizontally in the width of the slot. Then I used a number 11 blade to open a pilot hole in the slot. I inserted the saw blade and using my fingers to hold the blade, sawed, in both directions, a nice horizontal slot for the tab. I used a break to put a 45 degree angle on the tab and glued it in. I am very happy with the results and it beats my old way.
