After years of not being in the hobby, I’ve finally got the bug again and this time it’s here to stay! Working on my first “real” layout, getting all of my practice in before I go and build something grand

Welcome to TrainBoard! (p.s., maybe think about doing modules?)

Thanks all for the welcome! My “grand” will most likely be a basement layout, and yes I plan to do some modules as part of it. As for right now I’m going to get my bearings on this little 4x8 that I started. It was originally the Grand Valley set from woodland scenics, and that is my base for this project.

About 8 years ago I invested quite a bit in the hobby and due to unforeseen life events, the layout got put into storage. I even had DCC system purchased, NCE power pro w/wireless throttle, which I tested and still works (thankfully) so I plan to use for this layout, and then transfer it to a larger one later. Who knows, maybe I’ll just make this layout one of the “modules”

Nice, you need to start a thread on this so we can follow your progress. Here is the Grand Valley on YT that I follow. You might want to steal ( I mean borrow ) some ideas from him :) You have a name for it yet? Or is it still just the Grand Valley?

    Good luck!

I’d like to start a thread on progress and learning things, but I’m not sure on the forum rules on that or even how to keep it organized

I made some progress over the weekend, got some of the first layer of plaster down. Realized I should have laid the plaster, THEN the roadbed, but live and learn. Had a great time working on it, and that’s what matters

I feel that the painting of the tunnel portal was a huge success. Before and after pics attached.

Basically you just choose the scale to start the thread in and name it and go from there. Title is up to you. Like mine is called The New C&L and I just post updates to it. Any other questions just ask and I am sure someone can help you with making a NEW thread!

Plaster smears after roadbed are no problem. Take a one inch wide cheap brush or artist sponge dampened with water (squeezed out) and wipe the roadbed. You'll have to go over it a few times, rinsing and squeezing, each time. But it'll come clean.

On the other hand, don't sweat it if you're gonna lay ballast later.
