Well, it has been a while since I added to this. So, here's a few from Jan of 1995. I am not exactly certain where this consist is, but it is either in Livingston or Billings, MT. The access to the backside was restricted, so they are rather washed out, but still 40's! And a lone U-boat! Grandparents had a homestead in the middle of Jones Junction, which always made for a lot of good train-watching whenever we visited them. Here is a '2 and 2' consist, as the BN called it. @ SD 60's and 2 SD 40-2's. My oldest two boys in their much younger years!
Back in 95 this guy was a lot more beat up sitting exposed to the weather up on the Rimrocks in Billings. It looks much better now, repainted correctly and under an awning. This neat slug came to us at LRC for some repaint, I believe, And an engine rebuild is what was needed on this GP60M, And the tail end for today. Sure do miss seeing these guys...
Nice throwbacks! I reviewed the page before this one, and while I commented on the ex-PC D&RGW GP40s, I find it odd that DRGW sent them to Livingston for work, as its own Denver Burnham Shops were quite capable to do such work. Maybe Burnham was swamped with heavy work on the worn-out SP fleet?
I never did find out why. And at this point I don't remember what we did to them. It may have been wheel work, which would have to be done at the nearest capable shop.
Here are some more from Livingston at the same time period, Jan of 95. The 104 had a run in with a railcar in the Laurel yard, An early 40-2, With a pair of these cabless units! A heavily upgraded Uboat. The biggest change was to the radiators, making them as big as in a -7. Next in line,
Here's a part of the 2030, after removing most of the reuseable parts, And a few more.... Freshly repainted and in service heading west from Livingston! I was going to be riding the FNM 11160 up the mountain to test everything out while MRL used it in pusher service, which was always a lot of fun! So, that gave me an opportunity to catch a few other units!
I don't recall why this car was on the property, but it sure is purty! And a westbound, with MRL 366 in behind it, still wearing her old dress of green. A traded in lease unit, dressed up all snazzy after we did a class 2 overhaul and test and repaint Conrail, but I don't remember why it was there,
I like the CSX patched-out Railgon. Arrowhead Models did this scheme on their car, so it's cool to see one 'in the wild'. Those B30-7 B units sure are nice too. BNSF had such a diverse roster in the 90s and early 2000s, now it seems like everything is some kind of ES44.
Found an old display book, and here's a couple from that book, This is one of a series I took from an airplane for the BNSF while employed there. This would be in spring /early summer of '97 looking just west of north, The eastbound mainline just east of Glendive as it follows Glendive Creek past Allard heading to Beaver Hill in the far distance. Livingston in the winter of '94-'95. Notice the evidence of a roadkill..... And one night of heat lightening at the Glendive roundhouse in summer of '98 maybe,
Nice overhead yard photo. The lightning show is absolutely shocking! That's either a mad scientist at work or The Count from Sesame Street counting his marbles...
There was so much lightening that night! I just set my camera, A Minolta 35mm SLR, on a tripod, set the exposure time to max and took the f-stop down to tiny. 'Click" and hope for good shots....!
And a few more, the 9216 in '96 with a trophy, The remnants of the 15 April blizzard of '97! A couple of cold ones from winter of '96-97, And from the last grain run to Circle, MT.
I am not certain. I don't remember seeing any units in Milw colors hit the shop. Lots of Conrai, Chessiel and PC, and 40's showed up and became EMD lessor's, but who knows their heritage.
