The ad doesn't mention the Southern Pacific. I guess it was bought by the Rock Island. The many times I rode the Golden State in 1945-1947. We changed to SP crews and engines at Dalhart, TX. Watching an SP GS War-baby unhook and go forward a few hundred yards to take on water in El Paso was exciting.

Neat that they invite St. Louis and Minneapolis/St. Paul passengers too with Pullman and "daylight coach" accommodations that are "entrained in the Golden State in Kansas City". So many wonderful trains back then. @Hytec is blessed to have first-hand memories to enjoy.

The year that I was born, my mom put together a scrap book to show the zeitgeist (cultural climate) of that era. Inside there were folders covering everything from clothing fashions, industry, business, automobiles, food and especially travel. She loved to travel but with three small kids she and dad could not afford to do that for a while. But she loved to dream and I suppose she had kind of a bucket list of sorts. Here is an ad from the travel folder for the Great Northern. Little did she know that 9 years later, she, my brothers and I would be riding the GN from Seattle to Minneapolis-St. Paul. We could not afford Pullman accommodations but the railroad adventures we had were priceless.

The word "hie" a fairly obsolete, obscure word, is used in many crossword puzzles and means to hurry or go someplace quickly which, of course, makes sense in the ad.

Hence "high-tailin' it", coined 1890-ish, which is also going someplace in a hurry. Like getting out of Dodge. Making tracks. Hauling ***. Take a powder.

A classic Cascade Green 'deuce leads a local under Broadway in Minot, ND. A sign at right, of similar vintage, is at the Amtrak station platform. BNSF 1964 was built as Colorado & Southern 909 in March 1972.

Nicely colored consist. Great that CP has painted a few of their locos in the old maroon-and-gray scheme.

That big EMD sure looks sharp in it!:)

    Long and lovely!

I recognize the F B unit, of course but not the middle unit. I think I see flared radiators but... :D

    I think it's a GP38-2, but it has a winterization hatch.

That is correct! It's also a later production, judging by the modified "free-flow" blower bulge.

It's strange seeing a slug in the lead. Though I'm sure it's not uncommon.

Thanks you guys. After looking again, I did think it was too short to be an SD45. One always hopes, though. :D

So that's the blinking blue light I see in front of the locos at night on the Belen NM webcam...

I had made the connection with the blue signs, though.

    Cool.:)
