That’s disappointing. Hopefully they will arrive soon. I’m looking forward to seeing one on your layout.
Looks like I will have to keep my "Home of the UP Free zone" hanging proudly! I told a friend I would take it down if I could ever get a Big Boy with full DCC sound and lighting, that I would take it down. Made that promise about 16 years ago. He is a yard manger for the Roseville UP yard here in California.
What constitutes “full lighting” to you - headlight & tender backup light, do you have to have cab, firebox, number boards, etc.?
Proper Mars light/Headlight Tender lights Numberboards Oil Burners do not have a firebox to my knowledge
It would be nice if any of my models of diesels or steam engines had everything lit, as is appropriate and on demand. However, none of them to this day or last purchase have anymore then a headlight and maybe lighted number boards. Some have reverse lighting and that's about it. Works for me. Oil Burners and a firebox?? Nope. They have a fire house! Okay I had to take the shot. Are we having fun yet?
Don’t be so sure: https://youtube.com/shorts/efy39ZVXJdw?si=8y7jwV89FzEbi-Ei Of course, 4014 was converted to oil. Five years ago. The only Big Boy so converted.
Exactly. I've seen daylight vid of the same effect. Gotta heat that water up somehow When I was in the navy in the early 90s we still had steam powered ships that were oil burning and though the design changed a bit it was still a fire box/combustion chamber at the bottom of the boiler assembly.
Sierra RR #3 is also an oil burner and it does indeed have a fire box, though it is certainly different than a coal fire box. It's interesting watching them fire it up in the mornings using a soiled shop rag in the fire box to help it get going. Once it's running though it has a slow / consistent drip of oil into the pan in the firebox.
I surrender, I used inductive reasoning. Sorry I am not a railroad historian. I am a Theoretical Physicist by day and a model train lover by night and on the weekends when I am not doing yard work.
I think we just missed a real "April Fools" punk. Well, we all learn one step at a time. While others do it in leaps and bounds. The discussion has been interesting. Enjoy the rest of the month of April, Ahchoo, snivel, sneeze, cough and blow the old nose horn. Darn flowers and trees budding out.
They do indeed. Lined with fire bricks, just like a coal burner. They work via an atomizer at the backhead end, spraying (injecting) oil evenly across. The flames flicker quite a bit.
Not piling on. Just for fun was describing from experience what the inside of a oil burner firebox is like.
Sheldon, is that you??? Remember, do not put the trains in your mouth. (You had to see that episode of the Big Bang Theory)
The non-sound DCC decoder equipped version of Kato's Big Boy locomotive is now in stock at a major leading online hobby shop in the Midwest.
