I know Johnny Cash did. But I remember hearing that song before he was a star. Probably sung by a fair number of people.

    Rockford Story 3...

That particular job had an old head conductor, first name Dave, nice guy
and he knew how to milk the job to make money. One of the industries
we served was a wire and steel bar drawing concern. usually gon loads of wire coils. Remember now, this was a 3rd shift job and normally lasted the whole 12 hours. This job also used a caboose, quite a sight
to watch the cars rockin' and rollin' on that lousy track at that time.
Well, seems we come up to this drawing mill, open the doors, go inside
check our paperwork and also check for instructions from the shipper.
IIRC there were 4 or 5 gons in there already loaded. Ole Dave sez to
gather all of them up & cut in the air. So we grab the cars one at a time, tying on, knocking off the hand brakes, cutting in the air etc. We get all the cars togeither and Dave stops, looks at the paperwork again and sez, "Uh-oh, these are cars that haven't been unloaded yet", so we
just undo the whole process we just did. That was better than 1 1/2 hours of "station work" time for naught except to justify the time.
Our route also took us past the Rockford airport. Its a pretty good sized
airport and VERY busy during 3rd shift, I think a lot of air express and mail goes out during that time period.
There was also a "Distant Signal" at Flag(g) Center, it was out of service, but I used to have fun calling out "Distant Signal Dark" ! (you hadda be there to appreciate it!).

    Train Songs

I'm not sure if anything like this has been posted here before but I was just listening to some old train themed songs and wondered how many you guys could come up with. Bluegrass seems to go hand in hand with railroading so here are mine.
    1.Jimmie Rodgers - Waiting for a Train
2.Nashville Bluegrass Band - The Train Carryin' Jimmie Rodgers Home
3.Bill Monroe - In the Pines
4.Hank Williams Sr. - Lonesome Whistle Blow
    5.Pete Seeger - Casey Jones
    6.Ralph Stanley - Train 45
7.Johnny Cash - The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore (one of my personal favorites!)
8.Marty Robbins - The Wreck of the Old #9

Johnny Cash was a big railfan. He loved to hang out with the railroaders at Amqui tower (where the Henderson sub and Main Stem converge) on the L&N in Nashville. When he heard that the tower was going to be torn down, he bought, restored, and moved it to his property. I run the Main Stem of the old L&N from Louisville to Nashville and think about what kinds of things must have happened there every time I go by.

How about B Movie Boxcar Blues by Delbert McClinton, or Get me back on time, engine number nine sung by Wilson Pickett.
