Been nearly a year since anybody posted any pics here, so I think it's about time to revive the topic. Not quite Sydney, but some pics I took today (2008-01-12) on the Main South line. The summit of the Great Dividing Range at Cullerin. Running an hour late, ST23 Melbourne XPT reaches the summit at Cullerin. ST23 climbing the grade out of Gunning. Note the upper quadrant signal. Interail (QR National) bulldog 42105 stabled at Yass Junction. It failed the Friday before Christmas and 3 weeks later it's still there! Cheers David
I noticed the elevation sign is in feet, presumably from before the conversion to metric. I sure do like those bulldogs. We have a thread on that, too, somewhere?

Part 2. Silverton 442s6 and Austrac 4814 arriving at Junee with an empty sleeper train from Galong. 4814 was detached and left at Junee. A Sydney-bound XPT arrived at Junee just before the sleeper train departed. 442s4 on the rear of the sleeper train approaching Bomen. The Austrak concrete sleeper plant is in the background. Note the concrete sleepers being stockpiled in preparation for double tracking south of Junee. Cheers David
Alco-Goodwin. Alco model DL500G built in Australia by A.E. Goodwin. The 48 class is also a Goodwin product, Alco model DL531. Cheers David
Looking at the DL531 again, I wonder why I didn't recognize it. I've seen enough shots of Alco/MLW export units to know the style. The DL500G isn't so obvious, but the trucks resemble the Dofascos used on M630/636s. I think I wondered if they were English Electrics - sometimes those look a bit like Alcos. (Except not as good. )

Third expedition in three weeks! Part 1. Melbourne-bound XPT departing Yass Junction. Rounding the S curve at Colorado Road. On the down track at Bethungra Spiral (note the position). A collection of Pacific National 48 class (Alco DL531) and T class (EMD G8) locos at Junee. More to come. Cheers David
Part 2. The main purpose of the expedition was to chase an Australian Railway Historical Society special, or more correctly the empty cars returning from Albury to Canberra. The locos were from the Junee Roundhouse Museum, Goulburn Roundhouse Museum and Seymour Rail Heritage Centre. The cars were from ARHS and the Hunter Valley Railway Trust. 4403 (Alco DL500), 4821 (Alco DL531) and GM36 (EMD A16C) attacking the grade at Bomen. The train on arrival at Junee, where GM36 was detached. On the up line at Bethungra Spiral. 5 mins later, still on the Bethungra Spiral. In the previous photo it was on the track in the foreground. The earlier XPT photo was on the middle track (going down hill). More to come. Cheers David
Part 3. The shadows were geting long by the time it got to Jindalee. It was after 7.30pm by the time it got to Wallendbeen, but was still very hot as can be seen by the heat shimmer. By the time it got to Harden the light was failing. The train got to Galong right on dusk and this was my last attempt at a photo. I stopped a few more times to watch it go past in the dark but didn't even attempt to take any more photos. The train reversed at Goulburn and arrived back in Canberra somewhere around 2.30am, by which time I was soundly asleep. Cheers David
