Tonight a stumbled upon several model railroad passes. I'd acquired them years ago. At one time, I'd thought about having some made. But never got around to it. Which started me wondering- Do people still do this? I seem to remember there was a Pass Exchange in Model Railroader at one time? Have not paid attention in years. have not even bought an issue in ages.

    Anyone?

I'm in the pass exchange. There's a departement at the NMRA for pass exchange: http://www.getnet.com/~dickg/nmra/sigs/PassExchange.html

This is my pass for exchange:

Nowadays you have more e-passes. It's more convenient to e-mail an electronic pass than to mail it via post. I would prefer a letter. It's good to read about the other model railroader.

    Wolfgang-

Myself, I'd prefer the real thing, to an e-pass. So they seem more like what prototype railroads once used. Having such in hand, would also feel more personal.

    Steve-

No. It isn't that. It's a cross between emulating what real railroads provided, and a fun souvenir. Makes a model railroad seem a bit more real.

On the real railroads, a lot of those passes issued, were never even used. In one respect, it was a courtesy. Similar to exchanging business cards. But in other instances, it was quite necessary for doing business.

Possibly the most famous, by any model railroader, are those done by John Allen. Every now and then, one shows up on eBay. Either a G&D, or a DG&H. They usually draw a fair number of bids. DG&H are very, very rare.

My wife and I have been playing at the computer. Came up with a design. Nothing fancy. Am wondering if we could exchange? Please let me know if interested.

Or of any other people who'd care to engage. I can't believe there aren't a couple of other people, amongst a membership of this size! :eek:mg:

I'm interested in a printed model RR pass rather than an e-pass. Boxcab and I have discussed this recently. I haven't tried to make a pass on my computer but intend to when the more important work of getting my layout operating is completed. First things first!

The NMRA Pass Exchange seems to be dying out  , but I've exchanged a good many e-passes. I size them so they can be printed out on Avery business cards. If anyone would like to start an exchange, count me in.

to get a Westport Terminal RR pass is simple. You write a letter with your pass attached, my mailing address is on my site under "pass exchange", and you will get back a letter with the pass.
You can get from the NMRA a list with pass exchangers. Write to Robert Stobbe, MMR.

To get an e-pass, send the request per e-mail. You can look at my collection of e-passes at my site under electronic rail pass.

I would like to get some passes made for Sweethome Chicago, showing my Railimages album web address, that I can hand out to interested parties at shows.

How do I go about it?

    Thanks,

    Jon

I've designed my pass with Corel Draw, saved the design at a disk (at that time) and went to a printing business. I had them to print a few hundreds.

I would prefer printed passes but the design is the same like e-rail passes. I've got the ideas from others.

    Jon-

Like you, I am interested only in the real thing. Not e-passes.

We did our pass using MS Publisher. Arranged them for multiples on a single sheet. Then simply ran them off on our printer, using a light card stock just like the real thing. Seems to work just fine. We're only doing print on one side. Trying to keep it simple.

This morning, as per your web site instructions, I posted a letter to you. Hopefully, it will not become entangled in the Holiday mails.

I've tried, without success, to contact that named person on their site. Just tried again, a couple of days ago. Hope that since I am not a member, am not being ignored.

I'd guess the electronic age has not helped. There's something much more personal about receiving one via the snail mail. Crafted for me, by the sender. Myself, am old fashioned, so prefer the prototype style card. I've even made mine square cornered. As they once were.
