Here is a picture from Richard Percy's Espee modeler's website. In fron of the fuel tank and before the rear axle on the front truck, there are two cylindrical items below the sill. Like where the bell is located on the other side. What are these two items on this mean looking GP38-2 quietly resting in the Phoenix yard? Thanks. Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Yes. They come in many shapes and sizes, but all basically perform the same function; remove moisture from the air that is supplied to moisture -sensitive items such as the brake system, pnuematic control systems and other air operated safety devices. Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
That is what makes the familiar "whoosh" of air every minute or so. Always happens when you are standing next to the locomotive! Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Thats also the same spot where they place the fuel/water separator,a coil looking device isn't it? Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Not familiar with such a device. My experience has been all fuel related systems are within the engine compartment. Can't say as I've ever seen a fuel/water separation appliance. Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
not really air dryers, but air filters.. there is on most models a cartridge filter inside that will absorb some moisture, but it does not regenerate like a true air dryer. the one closer to the fuel tank is normally plumbed into the #2 main res, which feeds the airbrake. the other one feeds all the accessories [wipers, bell, horn...] and it comes off #1 main res. air dryers are usually mounted towards the rear/long hood end of a locomotive, and they are plumbed between #1MR and #2MR Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
