Funny, Our tree has the same "problem" However, Our tree is lacking of lower orniments, not do to children, but do to this little gal:
I have two trains around the tree this year. The first is the wife's G scale 4-6-0 and two passenger cars. The second is my HO scale which alternates from the Heber Valley's "North Pole Express" (Spectrum UP 618 and Athearn coaches) to the COKE train (the white Athearn set). Right now though, I have a Genesis 2-8-2 and the 2-8-0 "618 double heading a 6 car frieght, 50' gons with Hershey's dark choclot kisses as the load! Have a Merry Christmas!!

My first Christmas layout Here is my first ever train with village under the tree. I've got the bug... I'm looking to start a tradition in building a Christmas village a few pieces at a time every year. I am looking HO/On30 scale and bought the Cobblestone village collection from Dollar Tree, (great deal). I set it up under the tree, but would like to do something a little more realistic, with lighting, from here on out. I have a platform that is about 48" x 55" and will be expanding this every year. I would like to stay with the On30 size train as I can use my HO track. Any suggestions on some real quality sets?
As I said in the other thread, Dept 56 is the original. I'm going to try to get the old AF working this year. HO last year was fun, but Christmas demands tinplate.
Absolutely! Mine as a kid was a Lionel freight set, with a Union Pacific FA diesel. Still have it in a storage box in the basement somewhere.
We did three rail for decades. Still have all the 031 and switches to do it. But, for almost 20 we have done Large Scale. Used to do track power, now we just set it all up Christmas Eve, bring in a big radio/battery engine, strip out a string of LGB flats and low side gons (makes flats), and we deliver packages by train. Takes about 4 hours to deliver them all. This was three years ago.
This maybe the first time in 17 years I don't set up the Christmas Train. I have not purchased my annual MTH Christmas Car like I have done in years past and I'm not in the Christmas mood anymore, besides the family could care less if I set it up. For some reason, Angela's daughter Shelby, hates the Christmas train and will be happy if I don't set it up this year.
Scale craft, Looks like you need some idler cars to deliver some of those!!!! The wife told me the other day she thought a train around the tree would be neat, I'm going to strike while the iron is hot! Except I'm not ready at all, so it may be a bit sparse this year. We have like 7 or 8 flats, stripped smooth. They're ALL idlers! Sometimes I bridge several cars. The tradition is changing, this year here, next year daughter's house (with the trains), then son's house (my trains, his track).

I'm going to see if I can collect some On30 for next year. If not, HO will work. This year I'll get something going. Not sure about next year, we will have a little one at just the right age to be into everything. But, in a few years he will be my next junior engineer.
This will be the first christmas without the Lionel set running around the tree. My son is 18 months old now and leaves a trail of "destruction" wherever he goes (Ok, so it's not quite that bad, but still..). We decided not to set it up this year because he most likely won't be able to leave it alone (who could blame the little guy, it's a train!)
For those with wee ones, what about setting up a geotrax set? I have 3 kids now 8,7,6, and for their early years we set up a remote controlled battery powered geotrax set and they LOVED it! I know it is not a "real" model set, but it allowed them to experience having a train under the tree that THEY could play with, touch pick up (drop) without concern. For that matter they still enjoy the geotrax trains.
