I had been eying that motor for a while but the controller is big, The cost a year back was either $700 or $1400. The controller is a killer, the one listed now is quite small from when I saw them but still too big for moving it along with the motor in Z. I am hoping the controller will get smaller.

They want to place it in a mobile phone to control the focus of the camera. It cant't be big.

I just chatted with them and it costs $650 for motor + controller and the current controller size is 2.75" X 1.15" Model MC-3000 and the new controller they are coming up end of the year is 1"X2" Model MC-3100. They are also coming up with a driver asic chip by the end of the year which is 10mm square which will require a controller interface, that looks promising for Z, but at $650 I guess it is pricy for the hobby.
At qty of 50 the discount was ~10%. I'll have an application for it at work though..!-)

    Hi Tim,
Glad to see you back active again. I have been buying and collecting again for all the future projects, I have to live a very long time to use all the things I land up buying. Anyway the real life things have kept me away from Z, and ofcourse laziness too.
I'll be back on it starting this weekend, just needed a catalyst.

    Kim,
I was lead to this post from a posting I placed on a forum about learning microcontrollers. I would love to talk with you more so I could get an idea where to start and get some animation going myself.

    Dave,
Welcome to trainboard. If you are just starting off on animation there are a lot more options available now which are much easier to use. Check out
Pololu - Micro Maestro 6-channel USB Servo Controller (Assembled)
it is ideal for most animations and simple to program and dont have to worry about the low level details of the microcontoller. Just connect to a USB port and program it.
If you want pointers on microcontrollers you can PM me, it maybe off topic here.

Thanks, I've been a member here for a long time but I just haven't posted before. I sent you a PM and thanks for the help.
I love what you have been doing here and would like to see anything new you've done if you have any updates.

My wife gets animated as well when it comes to purchasing new stuff.:biggrin2:

I saw an animated bird once. I asked the club how it was working and they said watch works. It was a seagull flying around in a circle.

Here is my try on a nodding Donkey. Getting the gears to work smooth was such a pain but now figured out all the tricks and accuracies needed. I got this program Gearotic its pretty cool, I was easily able to make gears using that program. Here are some of the gears.
