I don't know if this has been posted here before, but I couldn't find it. On one of the Mexican railroad forums I frequent, someone posted a link to the following picture. It's an SDP40, KCS #3057, but it's still in the two-toned blue "Smurf" paint scheme of FNM. I've seen a lot of TFM (now KCSdeM) locomotives in the blue paint scheme as they only repaint them as required. But this is the only one I'm aware of (could be others, I guess) that's been given a KCS number (not KCSdeM) while still wearing the blue. Big KCS lettering over two-tone blue... that is different. It's nice to see they haven't plated over the vent on the steam generator section, though I presume they removed the boiler.
Not yet... as far as I know, most all of the TFM former NeM SDP40s still have their steam generators (note the exhust vent in the picture above) and their split fuel/water tank. Many of the Ferromex ones, on the other hand, do have them removed and blanked, and the partition removed from the fuel tank.
If you come across more, I'd appreciate if it you'd post about them (even without photos). Since no tracks run anywhere close to me, I'll be one of the last people to find out. I know some of my virtual friends on the Mexican railfan websites would be interested to know too. Thanks Ed
Well 'sigh' a few weeks ago one of those units came through on a freight and "NO CAMERA"!!!:angry: They look neat, I wonder how many units are still in the smurf and older color schemes. There was a railroad down there can't remember the state but they had old BN C30-7's and other stuff some of them had black painted cabs, also I noticed the windows were covered with rebar and the lead units in pics had pillows on them.

As you said, KCS or Kansas city Southern is a US railroad. KCSdeM (Kansas City Southern de Mexico) is their Mexican subsidiary. The unusual thing about this particular locomotive is its color scheme. This two toned blue scheme was the old FNM (Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico, basically Mexican National Railroads) color scheme. When FNM was privatized in the mid 90's, their locomotives were split up among the new private firms. Many of these still have the same blue paint scheme, only with new numbers corresponding to each railroad's roster. This is the first one I've seen (although other posters indicate that there may be more) where it still sports the old color scheme, but now has been relettered for the US parent railroad, KCS. Are we just talking about a two-toned blue unit? It's not that uncommon to see them north of the border. Now if you're saying that you saw a blue unit lettered KCS, then that's rarer. Don't have an exact number of Smurf paint schemes remaining, but my SWAG is approximately "a bunch". I have a number of photos of them in my Rail Images album, all taken within the last 3 years or so. Older paint schemes (outside of museums I assume) are much rarer. basically here we're talking about the orange and Brunswick green (aka black) NdeM scheme. I've never seen one myself, but I've heard on the Mexican railroad forums that there may be one or two still around. I don't normally pay much attention to locomotive previous owner history so I can't say for sure. I know that Ferromex (FXE) has a bunch of C30-7's. Anti-stone bars. Yeah, sad state of affairs but that's getting more common down here. Best regards Ed
