A 2nd contribution this week: Continuing to work on the Santa Fe GP7B project (slowly).... up to here now: Then got the numbers added via decal. Here I can start to see the 'good enough' approach starting to work... the stripe, numbers distract from the fact the shell has seams where the kit panels are. Hopefully, the above photo starts to display my trust that from normal N scale viewing distances, the 'good enough' approach will work acceptably. Here is a closeup shot: Continuing to work on it slowly..... More on this project over at: Des Plaines N scale GP7B kit - installation experiences to share? Have a good weekend!
Yup, Smileys on many Tidewater barges are prototypical. They musta' started putting em' on a few years ago as I don't remember them in the 70s. Brian
Hemi, try using Future brand acrylic flloor polish to "gloss" those number boards.I brush it on with good results although I understand it can be airbrushed too.
Pre-War Hornby Tinplate I finally got around to mounting a new display cabinet to show off some of my collection of Hornby O Gauge clockwork tinplate which my Dad had as a child. It's wonderful to see them and now I get to see them every day. The tanker wagons are particularly valuable, and nearly everything in the collection is in it's original box. They still get used, infrequently because of the space, but they are wonderful.
Pre-War Hornby Tinplate Hope you don't mind but just a few more shots. When I get time I'll get the station and viaduct down and get some shots of a layout but I need to move the bed first to make room! The lady standing behind the sign hoarding has lost her head, literally. We always used to stand her on the platform behind something so you could just see her feet. Most of the figures show sign of paint wear but are all in pretty good condition, apart from 'The Man with the Punched in Stomach'. My sister and I used to play for hours with this stuff, we had a long chat on the 'phone today reliving old memories. You can read a bit more about some of the photos at.... Okay. My first picture (Modeling picture that is) taken w/ the new camera. I got a NIKON D40X and will be learning this thing for sometime to come. I don't know jack about photography, but I think this is gonna be fun. I wanted to do close ups.. well, here's a close up.
Here is my recently built layout. It is 12'x 4' (3' in the middle) I have to replace all the legs, as thay warped before I could cross brace them, but soon enough I will be laying track, that is if I can come up with a track plan!! The unitrak is just temporary so I have something to run on.
First photos uploaded These are the first photos I've posted of my layout. I'm modeling a fictional branch of the N&W set in the mid 1960's. I was heavily influenced by Dave Frary's and Bob Hayden's work on the Carrabasset & Dead River HOn30 project in the late 1970's. Hence, I favor the heavy tree cover and focused scenes. Lately, I'm thoroughly impressed with Jon Grant's Sweethome Chicago layout viewed here on Trainboard. I could stare at his pictures for hours (just like I stared at the C&DR pictures 30 years ago). Taken with a cheapie HP Photosmart M425. Gotta get a better camera. Comments?
Very nice shots, Todd! I do not have the time right now (have to go to work), otherwise I would stare at them for hours ;-) And here is my picture. Took it saturday. I have no lights on the layout, so I am dependent of the weather and since it has been cloudy and gray last month, it is very difficult to take pictures........
A man after my own heart Pachyderm, I lived on the south east side of Urbana Ill back in the 70's. When I saw your location I thought to myself, "I know that town name." I lived a block off the N&W line where it left town. Used to walk down to Mira and watch grain trains being loaded at the big elevator. Nice layout shots you have there. Green is good. I can never complain when I see N&W trains, as I have an odd preference for N&W and ICG from living in a town where both ran through. What time period are you aiming for on the layout? How long have you lived in that area? More importantly, do you have any old pictures of N&W trains in that area? I have been trying to find someone with pictures of the Urbana to Sydney line for years now and had never met any model railroaders online who lived there. I used to see lots of units on the head of long hopper unit trains. I think they were old alcos. Not sure since it's just in my memories now. I know for sure that all the units I saw were high hoods. I just wish I could see some old shots of that line to see what they were.
I'm on some dial up this week, so I am adding some old photos from the layout. Here are some TOFCs the way they should be! Old Zacky Farms trailer from my California days. ATSF rebuilt and detailed, weathered. Here is my next TOFC project. Anyone remember this from older days in Eastern NC?
