Howdy. Here's a shot of the SD40-2 sans the fuel tank and the snow plows...and a few other small pieces...those are being done now. Just thought you's like a peek. The railing is plug in so we get more of a three dimensional look, plus they are much finer. We used engineering plastics so you don't have to worry about them breaking when being handled. I did some testing with a primer of RC Car paint on them since it's flexable...seems to work. I then shot paint over the railing for the proper color.

Looks good to a steam guy ; )

I see copper pick-ups in the trucks. Are these axle end point pick-ups like Kato uses? Picks up from all wheels?

The only odd thing I see is 4 class lights on the end, but for all I know that is normal.

Handrails do look way better! and even though I'm sure it's there I can't see the wide-body so much.

Yep, same sort of pick up Kato uses. This way we got rid of a bunch of rolling resistance, plus get better contact.

    Hey Joe,

Nice lookin' loco! It seems you guys got the hood width a bit more in scale on this one compared to the GP35 and GP9. Good work! Are you going to power all 3 axels, or just the 2 inboard ones?

    Cheers!

Never did like that "put a hot tub on the back porch" look but ya know, when it's got paint on it, it kinda grows on ya. That extra axle is going to really haul some loads.

Got an awesome idea though for a siding scene: Couple of folding chairs on the back deck with the Eng and FM out for a lunch break. Especially on Rob Ray's "Love Shack" beach scene.

i like it jeff! who do we know that will etch us some of those lawn chairs!! i'd buy some!!! (wouldn't that just drive the N scale guys MORE NUTS!!??) heh heh heh.

p.s. looking at the loco shot above, makes me wonder ... is that color SP lark gray (a project for joe) or is it a green color that might tell us what the first paint scheme might be. i may be jumping to conclusions here, but joe is known to sneak stuff by us (in plain sight). C&NW were painted green underneath, weren't they? what else? don't think WP had SD40-2s.

maybe i'm all wet here. df

Is the paint on the locomotive the same color as the paint Joe sprayed on the handrails? If so this may just be a preproduction primer job. Wasn't the GP35's body molded in the same color as the locomotive base paint job?

But either way Joe has my mouth watering with this picture. And by the way Joe I physicly sending you thoughts that Rock Island had at least nine SD40-2's (4790-4799) in the red and yellow paint scheme. Just to throw that out there, Rock Island, Rock Island, Rock Island. It's just something you might mention when roadnames are brought up. Did I say Rock Island?

Chris you Pig!! you beat me to it. When Jeff mentioned the rear deck I was going to show that one off. There's a great on line article on doing that engine in HO Scale. I can't resist, I'll be doing it and a contolling unit as well. I understand this was not a road unit but a slug or a B unit with a non functioning cab unit. Regardless, it's a striking engine.

PS...the pig thing was a joke )

Thanks, but Steve Ward, our Engineering Drafting Lead did all the drawings and mold design on this baby...I'm just the idea hack. I will admit that when ever he tells me I have a stupid idea, it sells really, really well...and he thought this was a real stupid idea. (just in case he's lurking out there ).....so I'm expecting big, big things. He also thinks I'm insane for wanting to do Steam in Z...)

Hi Rob, thanks. Yes all the wheels pick up and are powered with about the same final gear ratio as the rest of our GP's. Lots of gears in there!

    Very nice!!!! Can't wait!!!

    Joe,

I assume it will come DCC ready? Even though you have KATO style contacts. Also, how many engine numbers are there going to be? Looks very detailed....

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Chris,

We are using the same chassis design as the GP's, just made it longer. The same PC board is being used so what ever DCC system you are currently using, this will fit too. Right now the plan is to release everything in two road numbers, the first scheme is NW and I believe the second will be CSX, but not sure...I'll have to check.

    Cheers
