Change them how? The only rear shot I've been able to find so far is of 6017, and it's not terribly clear.
Ok. I see. The SD40A has more of the SD40 rear porch than the T-2 model. Since I'll most likely have to get a SD40 to do each locomotive with, that's not a huge issue (never done it, but you gotta try, right). My bigger issue is the long hood. I'm not a rivet-counter, but I'd like to get it close. Getting rid of the dynamic brakes is the part that I think might be the most difficult.
and trucks... As for the drawings, I did those some time ago to show the SD40A compartment differences. Mark4Design could easily use them to rapid-prototype the SD40A bodyshell, but you'll have to e-mail Mark for that and pricing. A special run could probably be made, but a gauranteed minimum shell quantity would have to be purchased to make it worthwhile.
*GULP* Ok, now I'm getting nervous about this project. I think I'll wait to see what the tunnel-motor looks like when it get's here. I'm not opposed to doing a close model, but, at the moment, I think I'm looking at: New short hood New cab New rear pilot and steps New long hood without dynamic brakes Fixing the tank size Different truck side frames YIKES!!!!
Just use the SD40T-2 mech, sand the exisiting HTC sideframes ~ halfway down, buy a set of Atlas Flexicoil sideframes, cut out the center portion that goes over the bottom of the truck, sand them ~ halfway down from the back and glue them on the HTC sideframes. For the sill... combine two kato SD40 sills (not exactly the correct zig-zag pilots, but the closest you'll get in N scale), using one for the front with the battery/equipment boxes and cab (the cab and those boxes sit at the same location relative to the pilot on a SD40 and SD40A), and the other for the rear (you basically need to extend the middle 'fishbelly' ~ 1 handrial length (adding a stanchion in the process)... you'll most likely have to fudge some with the handrail lengths... (i.e, one of the hadnrial gaps might need to be a wee bit longer) to fit this combined sill over the T-2 mech. Over lap the cuts between the handrail portion and the sill portion, glue them together with cyanopoxy. Graft two of the SD40 tanks together to get a 5000g tank (the prototype tank was ~ 24' 10" long). It's not a simple cut and splice though, as you'll want fuel fillers and sight glasses on each end of the tank, but they're in a different location relative to the end of the tank on the rearward portion (there's also no fuel guage (the holwe in the side of the tank) on the rear... That takes care of everything but the long hood...
Simple solution to the problem paint up a SD45-2 who would know but you.... Good lick with the project
I thought about this.... but.... I intend to have a handful of SD45's and SD45-2's around in lease service, so if they ever sat next to eachother, it would be obvious. I've got a boat-load of parts on their way, so we'll see what happens when I get going her.
If u want to be technical it should be sd50 standing in for a sd60 but you are correct it's just not the same. :tb-biggrin:
