Wow! the excitement of being a new Model railroader. Remember how it was when you first got into the MRR hobby. You would buy and stay up late, reading MRR magazines, books on building/planning a RR, Manufactures catalogs and drawing layouts. Then when the Internet came along spend hours and hours pursing the the different MRR HS and sites. All the while dreaming of that super layout you would buy and build. Buying way more stuff and spending way more money than you and your wife agreed to. Then when the credit card bills came in, hiding them. \ You would buy stuff just because if was a neat looking locomotive, piece of rolling stock, or a kit. And of course there was always the accessories that were must haves. Well, what has happened to that initial excitement? :tb-mad::tb-wink: Is it still with you? Are you still married ? Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Has it faded with time? How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? See ya Ron
I just bought some lumber to start construction on the new UPRR Rochelle Subdivision. I am more pumped now than I have been for quite a while. My wife is going out of town with her sisters this weekend, so l plan to spend Friday night traveling to Clinton, IA to take some pictures and all day Saturday and Sunday building benchwork. Daryl
Still with me after 50 years ago seeing trains run by my grandfathers house. Still married.....the second time *G*. Financially at a point where I can spend about whatever I want on trains. Finding new things to be excited about with trains all the time.

Well, what has happened to that initial excitement? Still got it. I can say this with confidence since a recent evening where I sat down at the computer to research spline roadbed. I started off on this forum, then Trains.com, then Google, then I noticed daylight on the horizon out the window and figured it was time to call it a night (morning?) Is it still with you? YES! Are you still married ? YES! Are you model train rich and cash poor ? YES! Has it faded with time? On and off but always comes back. Now I have to intentionally break away for a week or so to avoid burning out. How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? Stronger than ever since I just started construction on the first "big one" a few months ago. Does this mean I will be getting a supplimental issue to my November 2008 MR? Jamie
Is it still with you? YES Are you still married ? Yes, thirty eight years this month Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Sort of Has it faded with time? no, just started the hobby last August How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? Love it!
Is it still with me? Yes, by all means. Am I still married? No. Trains had some to do with it. The rest is personal. Am I model train rich? Not really but I have a sufficient collection. Am I cash poor? Yes, due to a disabling health condition. Has my interest faded with time? No...not a chance! How do I feel about my hobby today? Love it! This is the kind of survey I enjoy participating in. My interest in model railroading started as a child. I would sit on the Santa Fe Passenger Station steps at Barstow, Ca and watch my family of rails switch the yard, take a train out and/or bring a train in. I don't think I have to tell you I wanted to go out and play with those big, noisy, smoking, hissing, stinking, grand and amazing trains. A big NO, NO! Second best was an American Flyer, S scale passenger set as given to me by my step great grand dad. He worked for the Moffat line that became the D&RGW and wanted me to have a train that came close to one of the D&RGW Flyers. The curves proved to be wider then the room available. Cousins and a break-in to our garage pretty much put an end to my train set. My grand dad and dad, stepped in with a HO train set. I spent most of my young years, through my young adult years working with HO. You wouldn't believe the troubles we went through. It was horrendous. As can happen those legs, curves and a come hither smile led to getting married. Two great kids followed and lucky for me they shared my interest in model railroading. Once again, the space available for a layout became an issue. I down sized to N Scale. I gave up some of my HO equipment...pretty much trash. To this day I'm a multiple train tasker. Starting with G scale, HO, N Scale and I built an S and O scale railroad for a friend of mine that includes trackage rights...grin! I love to trouble shoot and or work with a team to identify and solve a problem. I enjoy building, wiring, track laying, lighting, some scratchbuiling and of course operating trains. This is the readers digest condensed version. Aren't you lucky! Grin! The one constant in my life has been Model Railroading and the friends I've made. There's nothing like good friends, to share the fun and excitement of this hobby. Have fun!.
Well, what has happened to that initial excitement? :tb-mad::tb-wink: Is it still with you? Yes, I think so. I think my fire for just about everything is less now than it was, but I still enjoy the hobby and get excited about the time spent model railroading. Are you still married ? No Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Not really. I have a nice collection and most everything I want/need. I spend little on the hobby anymore. Has it faded with time? I think naturally it has a little, see above. How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? I am liking it more since taking a more conservative approach to it. I'm not constantly worried about getting the items I want...I have pretty much everything I want and am focusing on modeling and trying to get my layout built. This is more fun and less stressful than spending money on products.
Is it still with you? Yes Are you still married ? Yes Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Need some new stuff, era change. Being stubborn. Has it faded with time? Occasional burnout. Rest and return to the hobby with renewed enthusiasm. How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? This layout is my "Recession Layout". I'm using up all my old kits, buildings, etc with very little cash being spent.
Is it still with you? Yes it is. Are you still married ? No, but that has nothing to do with my railroad, and the new GF allows me my hobbies Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Aren't we all? Has it faded with time? It ebbs and flows How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? Right now its an anticipation phase. The hollow core door layout has been packed away while we wait for the new house to be built. The new house has a gameroom that is mine, ALL MINE MUHAHAHAHA, sorry, was that out loud? Anyway I've been looking for a nice corner trackplan, probably in Unitrack, cause laying ballast was the biggest pain in the tuckus and I don't care to ever do that again, thank you very much.
Yes! Yes. To the woman who bought my first N scale, Christmas of 1972. I do have a fair amount of trains. Not to mention railroadiana... However, it was gathered over many years. So financial impact was kept low. I have had my periods of minimal activity. But still love it just as much as when I was learning to crawl, with wooden trains. Same as ever. I'm in this until my last breath! Boxcab E50
Is it still with you? Yes! Are you still married ? Still Happily dating. Girlfriend loves having the trains run in the background.. she thinks the sound is relaxing. Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Pretty poor in both actually.. :-/ But its enough to keep me satisfied Has it faded with time? Nope How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? Seems like every month something new and innovated comes out.. cant wait to see what the future brings
switchman, Welcome to the hobby. I know that feeling because I have actually gone through it three times. First, as a kid, 6 years old, dad made the Lionel layout in the cellar, and I would spend hours gazing through that catalogue. Then in the late fifties, 12 years old, discovered HO, and would gaze for hours in the hobby shop display. Then in the middle eighties, new sports injury, and rediscovered HO then went into N with a passion. Again, spent a lot of time with my friend with a large N layout, built mine, and have since passionately built several more layouts, and my main one, and models and structures. No it hasn't worn off. Is it still with you? BIG TIME Are you still married ? NO, but trains were not the reason Are you model train rich and cash poor ? ALWAYS Has it faded with time? NOT A BIT How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? PASSIONATE - RUN TRAINS EVERYDAY Ken "FloridaBoy" Willaman

Is it still with you? Yes, with ebbs and flows. Are you still married ? NO. Are you model train rich and cash poor ? Kinda, at least right now. Divorce and a credit squeeze will do that to you. Enough to have been cured of overbuying. Has it faded with time? Occasional burnout. As said above - rest and return to the hobby with renewed enthusiasm. Right now, work is taking precedence, but I expect the thrill will return. How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? I still love it, with ebbs and flows. Like DRD, I have found more joy in building something than collecting too much of everything.
Yep , stronger than a bears breath . Yep , and to a female , woohoo . Yep , compulsive acquirer of flanged things , and flanged things accessories . Nope , only thing that faded was the peepers , but got them fixed . My only regret is the time left to finish standardizing stuff bought to a condition it actually should have been when sold originally , ie wheels , body mounts , ride height , weight , etc . At 61 or is it 62 there may not be enough time . But at least I still have my memory .
Hahaha...not for more than one sentece from what I see! Just kidding of course--greatly enjoyed your post Jamie
Is it still with you? I don't think it ever left. Model railroading is one of my hobbies so it tends to compete for time and attention, but like I love both my kids I spend quite a bit of time on all my hobbies. Are you still married? Oh yes. No problem there. Of all the things that are ever points of contention in our marriage, model railroading is not among them. I think my wife is just happy that I am not into going to stripper bars. Are you model train rich and cash poor? I have a small collection of woo woo woo AND I am cash poor. The cash poverty has a lot more to do with the near-failure of our business earlier this year and the stagnation of my own wages than anything else. Has it faded with time? No, but it has focused a bit. I don't want to buy just everything out there anymore. I have narrowed it down to a range of things and I have been sticking to that, probably more because of the limited budget than anything else. When times are leaner, I work on more things at the club and detail out some of the stuff I already have. When budgets allow, I occasionally splurge a little. How do you feel about your MRR hobby today? I have lots of time left to work on this. It looks like I am going to get a couple modules started this winter and I am happy about that. Also, a lot of progress is being made at my club's home layout and I find that exciting, too, and I am also making more contacts. Just this last weekend, I was at a show in Chehalis, Washington, and got to meet Delamaize and his Class C Climax creations, and vvaynevv (Wayne), and also got to talk to Cliff (Mr. SP) a little bit more, and also his son Robert, in addition to several folks not on Trainboard. There are some really interesting and talented folks out there.
