At this time I have a long list of people on Train Board to thank for the help, the inspiration and information to make the USA Trains Registry thread possible. In no specific order...............I would like to THANK

    E-8 Charlie

He also gave me proper contacts for getting the special permission for reposting these pictures which we not my own. This is something I would like to know too. Are you talking about permission from Trainboard or other outside sources? I have been gathering photos from the net and USAT for my own use but then I would also like to put them in a PDF to share with my Trainboard friends. What are the "rules" for doing this so I don't step on any toes?

    Thanks, GovB

GovB, I never knew they made that many Bear Whiz reefer cars. You sure did come across a good find for the USA Trains info registry. Great job, it's nice to have all of this help.

    Trainman,

This may be a dumb question but did USAT ever make 1:24 tank cars? Was thinking about starting an oil tank car train. I'm not real happy with Bachmann or LGB (1:22.5ish). And what scale are their Overton coaches? I get two different answers (1:24 & 1:29) when I ask them.

    Thanks, GovB

    Buyers Beware!

    Trainman,

I noticed these two items on our favorite auction site. Both have no boxes and both are said to be USAT. One is certainly not USAT and the other may/may not be.

G Scale USA Trains Caboose Denver & Rio Grande Western

The first is not. This is a MDC caboose. Probably from a kit of theirs. I can tell from the platform steps. That's MDC.

USA Trains, Durango & Silverton Boxcar, G scale

This one is a little harder but the corner steps look molded in. Did USAT ever do that? The Herald/Logo on the right is a "Durange & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad". Isn't that a heritage railroad? I don't think this is USAT either. ???

    Trainman?????

    Thanks, GovB

The boxcar is LGB Trains. It's one of the Durango & Silverton Cars on my LGB List I've been after for years. USA Trains doesn't use a gloss finish like LGB Did. LGB Wasn't about realism, but colorful outdoors operations to entice the family. In reality they are the ones who shaped our scale to never be about rivet counting.

The other way I can tell that the boxcar is LGB is look at the trucks. The plastic isn't pure black. It's a charcoal gray. That color contrast against the black plastic wheels (Or metal depending on the model) clearly shows the truck springs molded in. LGB Trucks have never been sprung.

Would this box car fall under this catagory?

I would think show cars and custom runs should have their own catagory.

There are actually 4 different road numbers for the Golden West Service hoppers made for RLD. The numbers are consecutive SSW 77392 through SSW 77395. RLD is showing a stock number of 141001 on their website, however the boxes for the cars show no stock number.

There will be 4 different road numbers for the KCS hoppers. The hoppers have just arrived in country (2/11/2010). I will provide numbers when they are available. RLD is showing a stock number of 141002. This information will be verified when the cars are available.

03/03/2010 - road numbers are KCS 286003 through KCS 286006

    I have my doubts.

    Trainman ?????

Here is another auction find from a highly rated seller who calls this a "G Gauge Gorre & Daphetid Wood Box Car by USA Trains". Another I could not find on the list. Could this be a commemorative edition by either LGB or USAT of a famous HO scale layout built by John Whitby Allen in Monterey, California. (The name is pronounced "gory & defeated") in the 60's-70's? I asked the seller for a Cat. # if the box had one. The label end of the box was the only end NOT shown. All photos I found on a web search show this box car being pulled in an LGB consist. Could this have been a USAT commemorative edition? I have my doubts.

I have created albums under my profile for the 1988, 1989 and 1990 USAT catalogs. Let me know how this looks to you. I am also in the process of finding a bug free, reliable file hosting/sharing site so I can post these in PDF format. I know they will look much better that way. But for now, this will have to do. But that photo of me has got to go.

Another LGB Boxcar. The trucks are slightly off color from the wheels. Plus LGB does use brass handrails which are mysteriously missing. I cannot find any other LGB information on the boxcar, I exhausted my LGB Sources last night.
